A gunist or a gun owner

When the TV people start interviewing my neighbors, I know what they'll say.
"He was a nice enough fella. Quiet, kept to himself. Never would have thought he'd do something like that."

Making a shot on an elk, after working up a mountain, may make you a shootist. Having the savvy to push, lure, or just find a shootable elk near to where it doesn't involve packing it far on foot, makes you a lazy, smart, and experienced elk hunter... Killing an animal as large as an elk without thought about where, and how you're going to pack it out is foolish. I realize that many folks have the use of pack animals for the purpose, but DIY hunters need to be smart about where they kill animals...

A friend that hunts over the world says field dressing and packing it out is the job of the guide.

Many years ago, I went on a hunt where mules were used to pack out the game. A friend went on a hunt a couple yrs ago and said everything is done now on ATV. I no longer go on long distance hunts but want them on tv.

My question is: Do people still use pack animals any more considering the popularity and ability of the ATV?

A "Gunist" ---- Probably, if he or she was ever accused of a crime, and the authorities came to their house, and piled all their guns, accessories, ammo, reloading components, etc. in the front yard, as has been done on numerous occassions, it would not only make Local, and State News, but National News as well. Some of us may even make International News . . .

Best Wishes,
Tom

Usually when someone calls me a gun nut I smile at them and say "I prefer the term prepared." and ask them how it feels to go through life as a potential victim. Sometimes they misunderstand and start to look at me kinda scared. That's when I say "Relax. You're safe now. I'm packing."

Years ago, a buddy killed a magnificent 6x6 elk way up high and way back in the hinterlands of Colorado. He gutted it and buried it in a snowbank. We then went to a friend who was a local guide and had, in fact, guided us on hunts before for help getting the critter back into camp.
He informed us that that was one of the very few places he could not get to with anything he had- jeep, three wheeler, or pack animal....we wound up packing it down on our backs....over three and a half days and butchering it in camp for the trip home. Some of the most exhausting work I have ever done....When the game falls then the work does indeed begin.

I was recently introduced to a gentleman and noticed a Glock holstered under his coat. He quickly explained that he was a retired cop and said "You must be a gun guy." I was flattered. I just think of myself as a gun guy.

Jeff Cooper said the proper term was "Shottist".

I prefer to be known as a shooter. I'm not an expert, or a world-class marksman, but I do a lot of shooting, and reloading, and gunsmithing. Gun-nut infers some kind of a whack-job (to me), Outdoors Enthusiast is too vague. So call me a shooter.
