I have read some posts regarding a 'forcing cone' issue with lower grain bullets in Model 66 revolvers. I am concerned that the Hornady Critical Defense loads with 125gr Flex-tip bullets may have problems. Does anybody else carry/shoot these rounds?

FYI- I have a no dash model 66 Combat Magnum w/2.5'' bbl

While the forcing cone damage to K-frames from high-intensity 125 gr loads is real, it has been greatly over-exagerrated. Usually, it was a result of heavy and constant use of such ammo, thousands of rounds. This is the type of use the medium-frame K was never designed for, relentless and heavy use of full-power ammo whether the bullets were 125 gr. or heavier. It was intended to be a .38 Special for practice, a ,357 magnum for carry. The average shooter will never encounter a problem, and if you want to use light-bullet loads in self-defense applications you should never have a problem.

Thanks for the response. I inherited it from my Grandfather when he passed away, he was a retired police Lieutenant. I know he shot .38 specials for training, and qualified with the .357 magnums. I have no clue how many rounds have been through it. He carried it for 6 years. I hope the 125grs will be good, I love the reviews on the Critical Defense bullet performance.

Shoot just a few 125's just to see where they hit and relegate the rest for carry only. When you shoot the gun for practice use 158 grain bullets. A few fired out of the gun if and when you ever need it won't harm anything.

Thanks guys. I hope to never have to use the 125's but if in a self defense situation, they are going to come into play. For practice I use 158gr.
