Before I paste Homer Bast's diary from this date in 1945 off the beaches of Okinawa, I want to say that the work mostly depicts what was going on with the Navy. Onshore the Japanese were pitching a suicidal battle meant to warn the Americans off invasion of the home islands.

The Yolo was pretty much a stop and shop for small vessels. They also quartered Sea Bees and would provide hots and cots to those that were in need.

My dad once told me. I just helped run a hotel... Some Marine that had not eaten or slept for two or three days would go AWOL. We would get them a shower, feed them, give them a place to sleep, and send them back.

April 29, 1945

For almost four hours the crew remained at GQ finally securing at dawn. Yontan felt the full effect of the bombs dropped by the aircraft making runs over the field during the night. Seldom does Yolo fire because of the smoke. To fire would give away the ship's position. The night was ideal for an attack as a pale yellow moon rising across the island turned night into day.

In spite of the lack of sleep this Sunday the boys turned to and supplied one ship after another. After lunch Yolo was underway to an anchorage near the 14,250 ton cargo ship Azimech, where 199 tons of dry provisions will be transferred. LCMs haul the supplies to Yolo. Their ramp is placed on the ramp of the Yolo and the provisions are pushed along on the conveyor belt to the storage bin. The transfer began at 1500 and now long after dark the operation continues. With no boom, crane or machinery of any kind, the handling of all types of provisions becomes a back breaking task. All who observe the operation marvel at the crew's efficiency.

Early this morning the chaplain came aboard for church services. They were well attended. Mail at this juncture arrives from the coast in about 18 days, although a number of sacks make it in 10. The fleet post office is located on a LST fitted out like a post office. The Navy does all in its power to bring mail here as soon as possible. The High Command realizes mail does much to boost morale. It is vital for a happy ship.

This afternoon two destroyers, the Haggard and Hazelwood II, of TF 58, operating 100 miles off Okinawa, were hit by kamikazes. Some 57 men were killed and 66 wounded. Following dinner and the movie, GQ sounded at 2100. It lasted until midnight. Many contacts were tracked but none closed.

Hey-hey 'n howdy, Drifters.

Tis FRIday! Tis FRIday! The weekend is here.
Let's have some brisket, and don't forget beer.
And cake. Of the Germanic Chocolate kind.
What other yummy morsels can we Drifters find?

Some emu, perhaps. Make mine barbecued.
Or penquin, or squirrel. The latter's good stewed.
And bacon. Or not. That depends on your taste.
Send unwanted pork here. It won't go to waste.

Let's not forget snicker. With doodle tacked on.
And pie! Oh yes, pie. Apple, peach or pecan.
For those on a diet, I must ask your pardon.
If these dishes upset you, get some stuff from the garden.

Some 'maters, and taters, and carrots and chard.
I've got messes of dandelion greens in my yard.
It may not be healthy, or prudent at that.
But I'd be cookin' those greens in some hot bacon fat.

It's late now, and dinner time has come and gone.
I'm getting quite tired, and starting to yawn.
So I'll cease in my typing on vittles and drink.
And give you a very cool video link.

I LUUUUV this movie. Think I'll go see if the library has it. Good Saturday night date flick.

Night-night, Drifters.

I was once privileged to witness a semi-private concert, not ten feet from Tony Iommi.

The speed with which his hands moved up and down the neck of his guitar was mesmerizing. The solos were amazing, and you could almost feel the music pouring out of the man.

Afterwards, turning to a friend who was there, I inquired if he was as impressed as I was by the guitar work.

I then learned that it had been a poster, on a wall, in an apartment, in front of which I had pulled up a chair and enjoyed myself for around an hour. For some reason, that didn't make it any less amazing.

Then you most certainly must be a fan of one of the Best guitar solos he ever fingered the frets on.

My wife and I and two of her sisters were going to go about 20 years ago, I sent for some fishing info, when it came in my wife said what is that, I told her it was fishing info for Ireland, she said we are going for sight seeing and to look up family not fishing, I said good, you and your sisters can go to Ireland and I will go to Mt and do some trout fishing, they found my family but none of theirs, I shouldn't have been so thick headed and gone anyway but that's the Irish in me. :D

Nothing wrong with Trout fishing in Montana.
Woulda' been my choice as well and i'm part Irish.

When my Grandpaw came back from WWII my
Grandmaw wanted to go and visit England on
vacation one year. Grandpaw told her, " I looked
Lady Liberty in the face one time" (coming home
from European theater by ship), and i never want
to see her face again.
He never did leave the Country again.
