Pagiacci (The Players)

A troupe of players is coming to town to perform. In this prologue before the opera starts, Tonio tells the audience that actors are just people and the problems seen on stage often reflect real life. This is an old performance by Leonard Warren, the great American baritone.

These old world plays had similar clownish characters and were usually improvised, often a comical take on cuckoldry. Here Canio who has realized that his wife Nedda is having an affair with one of the townspeople. He paints his face for the play, angry that he is the clown in real life. He says,"YOU are Pagliacco". This is John Vickers from a film made in the 60's.

In this scene, the players are in the middle of the performance, with Canio being the unwary husband when he loses it and declares that he isn't the clown any more and tries to get his wife to reveal her lover. The audience thinks its a great performance. The players try to salvage the rest of the play, but it ends badly for everybody.

The final line of the play is "The comedy is finished".

This is one of the most.....

This is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard and I've heard a LOT. I feel like I'm laying in a boat on the ocean at night watching the stars while the boat rocks in the swells.

The Pearl Fishers by Bizet

The setting is near a Hindi temple in Ceylon. The natives dive for pearls in the ocean. Two men, Nadir and Zurga are in the temple and are both awed by the beauty of the high priestess, Leila, and start to sing of how lovely she is. They both realize that the other is taken with her and become angry. They stop fighting and declare that nothing will ever break their friendship. They never do except that Zurga, realizing that Nadir and Leila are meant to be with each other, sacrifices himself.

This is a very early opera by Bizet who later, of course, would compose 'Carmen'. It is very flawed as pointed out by critics, but there are some real gems in here.

Well, my goodness....

Speaking of Bizet's Carmen, here is a great movie version with Placido Domingo and Julia Migines, who sings, "Habanera". I think her Carmen is more authentic than others, as an Andalusian gypsy type more so than the dressed up Carmens we are used to seeing. (She didn't even shave under her arms). I really like it when the little, stout guy dances with her.

Don Jose', a corporal has a mother that needs taking care of and a girl back home, but he got one look at Carmen.

Forget the stereotype.....

Remember the stout opera singer? Somebody did some genetic engineering and created a generation of HOT opera stars. Anna Netrebko was working as a janitor at the Bolshoi Opera when she got a try out. I wanted to include the video where she sings this floating in a pool, but the sound quality was awful. So you'll just have to look at her on stage.
