In Manchester, NH for a trade show - need kwselke's recommendation for a local brew.

That's a tall order, I've never been to New Hampshire. I believe the Smuttynose Brewery is from somewhere up there and I've seen a couple of thier brews in stores here in Houston. Ask a local what they would recommend. Pilsners and wheat beers are good this time of year, but I never turn down a stout or strong ale. I'm still working on finds for National Donut Day... :D

Donuts and Beer... What a wonderful world!... Enjoy!

Good Afternoon

Just got back from taking our Grandson to the Orthodontist.

It looked like a Senior Citizens center, only with kids. I guess it's the Grand Parents job to get the kids to and from the Dentist?

I haven't seen so many old people, since I last visited a nursing home! Saw so many canes and walkers, I thought I was in a rehabilitation center? It smelled like a mixture of moth balls and turpentine? But, I guess my old butt fit right in!

Good afternoon drifters, it's 103 in the desert today and the sun is shining. Been listening to the music and reading the funnies and stuff you folks have posted and as usual it's all good.

No hordes have been spotted and as I said before I think they have gone north to escape the heat of the desert. I see a lot of post here and all over the net about alligators so maybe they will join the hordes but we here in the desert will be spared their attack because we don't have enough water for them to swim in. With all the flooding in Houston you folks better watch out for stray gators and snakes driven from the low lying areas.

Actually, I believe I saw a coyote in Briargrove this morning. It moved silently and did not come to check me out like a dog would. It sure was not a cat. I've hunted throughout Texas and have had enough encounters with coyotes to know, even if my eyes are old and it was still dark.

Gila monsters ! 😛

I think I am going to stay up all night and post in the drift. I'm really not able to sleep and have nothing better to do. So I should let those creative juices flow and cut loose tonight in the drift. I may be on the cusp of a deep and profound thought that could initiate global change and usher in world peace. Wait...Eureka...here it is...the momentous idea that can chamge the world. I believe that is we only c we b ge St he an Heidrick oath in nd en . Homer's diary goes back to when he took delivery of the ship in 1944. I've only shared a small portion of the story here.

Now that the USS Yolo has been in Okinawa for two months, rumors of the next assignment are about. In my opinion, it is depressing.

Now this date 1945 as seen by Homer Bast CO of the USS Yolo.

June 1, 1945

No raids or alerts all day although at 1935 my friend Mac's (DE 750), Mc Clelland, downed a Zeke north of Kerama. It seems strange to go this long without some enemy activity. Unlike the most recent weather, today was ideal with a bright sun and a rather stiff breeze. The morning passed with the usual procession of ships coming alongside. Lunch over, the officers sat around in the ward¬room and discussed all aspects of the war. Most believe this campaign is rapidly coming to a close and we will be sent to a staging area for the next invasion - the Kyushu landings. Most would like to see a period of intense bombing and a blockade established. There was no conclusion as to whether Japan could be defeated in this manner rather than invasion. It was not long after this discussion that we learned the Kyushu invasion was set for November 1.

I spent most of the afternoon on the bridge observing the harbor, the beachhead and activity ashore. Three vessels, PC 1599, LCI(R) 648 and the LCI 565 grounded at Hagushi but all freed with some damage. One can easily follow our aircraft as they bomb Japanese positions. One too, can clearly see the AA as the enemy seeks to halt this intrusion. The entire anchorage is visible and shore activity is constant. Captain Brereton reported today 56 LSTs were present. He also told us there was a shortage of water for small vessels. We understand that Teton (AGC 14) issued 96,000 gallons to Calamus (AOG 25) for further issue to small ships. Dinner over, all hands scrambled below to a double feature which had been arranged for tonight. With the projector fixed it was good to see a show again. While we were enjoying the movie five destroyers got underway from their Hagushi anchorage and formed a special screen which patrolled the edge of the anchorage on an East-West line rather than the North-South line as they usually did.

... my last visit to Florida.

We are not as high in Iowa as I thought.
"In 2014
Iowa ranked 13th in the
percentage of
population age 65 and
older. "

Of course in the winter that figure changes as many Iowans go to Florida, Arizona, and south Texas, etc. so I guess we are are confirming bigwheelzip's observation!

Rainy evening here in the Houston area tonight, starting to get really old worrying about the weather! All kinds of crazies on the news tonight makes you wonder where these characters come from. I guess with millions of people you are going to get a few but they sure have been coming out lately and the long hot summer hasn't even started! Oh yeah Hurricane season starts today!

I sure hate the way the wind makes my bullets drift.

My bullets drift all over the place also. The winds really affect me at 7yds! Especially after a good dinner, or a big breakfast, lunch not so much?

Luckily the port-a-john is not to far away, sometimes this issue brings on tremors! You know dancing from one foot to another! Darn wind!! 😏

That's like my wife. She tends to wear her food on her clothes. I'm not sure if she has anything without a pasta sauce stain.
Me? I'm a tidy eater and she teases me about it.
