My friend just got his 15-22 back from S&W. His extractor blew out after 70 rounds the first time around. Went out to shoot it and blew the new extractor out on the 3rd round.

I wonder if S&W is even looking for a fix for this. I am hearing and reading about it way to much. I am starting to wonder not if but WHEN mine is going to go. I love the gun but am really starting to doubt S&W and this rifle.

See that's what I'm worried about, getting mine back from S&W then go out and shoot it and blow again. Mine blew last weekend and S&W is sending a return label.

I've put several hundred rounds thru mine after the fix.

I've got 330 flawless rounds through mine so far but it's starting to sound like i'll have a nice wall hangar to put up over the fireplace before long.

I guess you have not heard the news. S&W CS has advised a 15-22 owner here that it's all the fault of the ammo manufacturers.

S&W said they will soon release a list of manufacturers that are approved to use in the 15-22 to eliminate OOBs. Rumor has it that the top two on the approval list are A-Zoom and Pachmary Snap Caps.

i got my 15-22 on Sept 4th, it jammed like heavy D, I didnt give it a chance to 'break'. So i took it back to where i got it 'Academy'. They mailed it off on the 8th. Got it back in October. Put over 500rds through it since, no problems. Hopefully stays that way. Good luck to all.

what ammo?

I just got mine back today and now i am scared:(

I was going to get a 15-22. But after all these horror stories I'll stick with my Nylon 66 it may not be (tactical) :) but it works 110%. Maybe Smith & Wesson should enclude a sack full of spare extractors & extractor springs with the two complementary magazines?

mine broke last friday and im still waiting on my shipping tag from smith&wesson.

Now's your Remington Nylon 66 holding up. I recall having one a loooooooooog time ago. Nothing but happy memories.

I wasn't kidding when I said I preordered a return shipping label right after I bought my rifle. It doesn't cost you anything to have them e-mail or snail mail it to you.

The first time around was on Federal bulk from walmart (the red box), second time around was the Winchester 333 pack.

I shot an entire bulk box of 333 with no trouble so it might just be something individual to each gun ? ... but it doesn't mean mine isn't a ticking time bomb. Still kinda skeptical till I get more rounds through it.

Mine just went back to the factory yesterday, hope they fix it quick and get it back to me.

Except for the fact that now they have your serial number and are waiting for it to return it for repairs. Waiting too long between when you cried wolf and maybe sending it in 6 months later if it does break they could claim you continued to ues the gun and did more damage and deny it all together. I'm just playing the Devil's advocate

Welcome aboard, Mr Ed.

I have forwarded your analysis to my attorney for further examination..... and to the guys at the range for giggles. :p

And to think... I just sold my vintage CBC Nylon66 to my co-worker along with my 7 round clip fed Marlin to buy this AR lookin thing! (It looks and feels the part, and it would seem with all the jams and such, it lives up to the reputation of a real AR) :D

Ahh well, I'm still happy I got it! I'm sure in the long run I will be happy with my M&P!

I'm happy I have mine too but it's the only ar I will ever own. I prefer reliablity over tacticool anyday. I know I can throw my ak in a dirt pile and it will fire BETTER;)
But, just because reliablity is my preferance doesn't mean I don't totally love my ar15-22. In fact I just bought her another 3000 rds of fed bulk. :D

I finally got to shoot mine today. Well 11 rounds worth before my extractor hit me in the face.

I was shooting Remington Yellow Jackets. I almost had it dialed in at 25 yards. I was literally on the range 10 minutes. It took me longer to set up my gear.

I read about these issues but I figured that since mine was one with the factory flash hider I was ok. I have several Smith revolvers including a 460XVR and never had any issues.

I had high hopes for this gun. On paper it looks perfect for my application. I called S&W and there are sending me a call tag.

Smith recently released this - Posted in thread- Letter From S&W

"There is a broad array of .22LR ammuniton made by several manufacturers in different brands and types. Smith & Wesson has found wide variations in primer sensitivity and other characteristics between some brands and types of .22LR ammunition. Based on the design and action of the M&P 15-22, Smith & Wesson recommends that you use the following brands and types of .22LR ammunition for optimal performance in your M&P 15-22 rifle:

CCI Standard Velocity
CCI Mini-Mag
CCI Stinger
Federal American Eagle
Federal GameShock
Winchester Super-X High Velocity
Aguila Super Extra High Velocity
Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity

Through our testing, Smith & wesson has also found that there are several brands and types of .22 LR ammunition that do not perform consistently or reliably. Consequently, Smith & Wesson does not recommend that the following brands or types of .22LR ammunition be used in your M&P 15-22 rifle:

Remington Golden Bullet
Remington Thunderbolt
Remington Target 22
Winchester Wildcat
Any and all sub-sonic brands and types."

----------- Rem Yellow Jacket does not appear on the Does Not Recommend list. Maybe S&W has a limited quantity of ammo to test ?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Did you find the piece that holds the extractor in place? Curious if it is the old or new design?

It was the new design with the tab. That was the part that hit me in the face. I never did find the extractor itself.

I'm now officially a mp15-22 veteran. Round # 1012 blew up in the chamber when it fired against the unextracted #1011. Kinda fun having a bullet go off 1 foot from my face...

I actually recovered the torn-in-half #1011 from the chamber AND the extractor pin from the floor of the range as a souvenir.

Now for my last newbie question - is there someone special to ask for at S&W support, and do they pay for shipping? :(

welcome to the club!!

call 1-800-331-0852 , ext. 2905 they will ask name, address, phone number, and serial number, tell them the extractor blew off and they will email you a return label and instructions.

place the gun back in the original box along with a letter with the above information and the reason why its being returned. either place the box in another box or just wrap the original box with plain paper and attach the shipping label and take it to a fedex store and make sure you get a tracking number

should take about 8-10 days to get back and will shoot 100 times better when it gets back.

Yes, S&W pays for shipping both ways. Someone adult needs to be at home to receive the gun and sign for it when it returns.

Was your extractor pin the old version or the new version?
