I wanted to build a reproduction case for a first year Model 57 until I can locate an original. They are a little different in that the mold has some give to it, not like styrofoam. I did a little research and came up with a way to make a respectable reproduction. This led to making a few customs.

I used a factory box and replaced the interior. No special tools required. A couple of hours of work. Any custom design possible. Excellent support and protection.

I have to make one pretty soon for an 8 3/8 inch K Frame. Does anybody want to see how it's done? If members here find this useful, I'll do a step by step.

Beautiful work. I think that wooden cases for handguns are the cat's meow, and I have spent some big bucks on S&W cases for my N-frames. I'm a geezer with poor fabrication skills, but I would love to see how you made those. Awesome!

Those liners appear to be plastic sheeting that is heated and then vacuum formed over a mold, much like magnetic signs for vehicles were done fifty+ years ago.

They are actually a solid foam material, firm but a tiny bit spongy. It's a neat trick, easy to make. Much more durable than plastic liners and cardboard. These are tough and will last many, many years. I'll keep you guessing but it's the coolest thing ever, useful in many ways and it's so easy a Bubba like me can do it.

The four S&W presentation cases I have owned had liners made like I described above. A solid foam mold as you describe makes more sense, but likely was not available years ago.

So what would one have to pay for you to fabricate 1 or say 4 box liners, 3 being 6.5" N frame and 1 being 6" K frame? All with Target stocks.
Asking for a friend.

Rick

I have had the basic box made for over a year, but would really appreciate the info on the inside. Can't wait for your post.

I tried cutting out EPS foam and the jigsaw spit foam particles everywhere! They clung to everything and on trial #2 using a fan made it worse. Polyfoam may be the answer to the liner. I'll wait for a professionals instruction like everyone else.

I got rid of all of that blue imitation felt in all of my presentation cases (about 19) because the felt breaks down and will start to adhere to the gun and do damage to the finish. I replaced the felt over the plastic mold with a piece of foam rubber (comes in any color) cut to size and dried for several hours in the oven to prevent moisture. Works and looks great. Much better than that flaky blue felt and it does not attack the finish on the firearms.
Your cases look great but be careful with anything that comes in contact with the weapon for a period of time.

I used to do woodworking but not that type to make boxes and such. But the one you made is very nice (coming from an old woodworker). Can't wait till you show us how you make them.

Larry, I'm using factory S & W boxes and just replacing the interiors. I used to make boxes long ago and it was a lot of work and took a lot of equipment to do it right!

I too would love to see the process. I fancy myself an amateur (like everything else) woodworker and have planned a few boxes but never moved forward with it.

I remember reading on it and some used low expansion foam for the mold. I didn't spoil the surprise did I?

I would say something but that might ruin the surprise. :) I hope nobody is disappointed.

No, what I'm doing is something very simple and can easily be customized from case to case. The delay is I'm waiting for some materials to come in - should be here by tomorrow.

I just realized that the way I wrote the post, people may think I'm building the entire box. I'm just using factory boxes and replacing the interiors. Many of the boxes had weak interiors that degraded over the years, so this is a solution that allows customization.
