It's my understanding that the barrel is one of the parts that sometimes requires hand fitting. Is the barrel fitted to the slide? I'm asking because I have an extra barrel and slide for my 6906. I think that barrel and slide came off the same gun. So if I put both barrel and slide on my 6906 will it not require hand fitting. How can I tell? Can someone explain the process. Thanks

The barrel hood is usually the only part of the barrel that needs minor fitting....usually only in terms of the length of the hood or "tab".

Gage specification on the interface between the end of the barrel hood, and the breechface is .001" to .003". (another one of my handouts indicates .000" -.005" so I'm assuming smaller is "better")

Unlike many new 1911 barrels, the sides of the tab should not require fitting to the slide, even on a new, unfit, replacement barrel.

If your barrel has been previously fit, it should drop in. (be sure to verify proper hood spec, and check that the slide closes properly)

Barrels are fit to the slide. In the rare instance hand fitting is required, a tiny bit of material is stoned or filed off the rear of the tab or hood. If the hood is too long the barrel won't drop fully into battery engaging the mating locking lugs in the slide.

If you have a spare complete top end assembly for your 6906, the barrel is likely already fitted to that slide it came with.

Cheers

I bought the 6906 from a pawn shop for $374. It's one of those CAI trade ins from I think Israel. I then bought one of those kits from everygunpart. The kit has just about all the parts except the frame. The upper parts are all on the slide. I believe all the parts are from the same gun. I just bought them for spare parts. I thought it would be good to have a spare barrel, in the case of this Israeli barrel having a lot of wear, but after inspecting this gun, all the parts look good. The slide has some holster wear and I was thinking about putting on the slide that I got from everygunpart because it is pristine. I will probably keep the original slide on it because the holster wear isn't that bad and it gives it character. I was just wondering about swapping the barrel and slide because someday I might do that. After reading all your replies, it sounds like it should work. Thanks

Probably best to keep the barrel and slide together as mentioned above.

One caveat not mentioned so far (and I think it applies to 69xx as well as most of the other 3rd gens) is that there were 2 distinct widths of the barrel hoods.

As I recall, the early narrow hood was about 0.3 in wide while the later wide hoods were about 0.4 in wide. Cutouts in slide were similarly matched.

But other than that I have successfully swapped barrels of same hood width without any problems.

Have you tried just the slide on your frame?
This should be repeated.

Quite often a slide does not care to easily go right on to a different frame -- and if it does slide right on, you will want to check the decocker controls and make sure that works properly as designed.

I will check to see if the slide goes on easily and I will check the decocker timing.
