So I like to trade and swap guns but this one takes the cake. I bought a used P320 AXG from Buds guns for $900 out the door. A local feller posted up some guns for trade and I mentioned the 320 to him. He said he would trade 2 for 1 so I made a 2 hour drive to meet up and ended up trading the P320 AXG for a never fired Virginia Dragoon in .44 mag and this Nickle Plated 25-5 in spectacular condition. We stopped by the gunshow on the way home and I sold the Dragoon before I made it through the door for $600, so Ladies and Gentlemen I present my $300 .45 Long Colt Model 25-5. I do have a question, will it kill the value if I send the cylinder to TK custom and have it cut for .45 acp moonclips to make the gun more versatile? I've been offered $1200 by a collector and I don't wanna completely destroy that value by doing something stupid.

BA-DA BOOM BA-DA BING! sell to dealer for the $1200 offer. kmho

I don't see myself selling this one. Nickle guns are hard to find around here and so are the .45 Colts. I'm asking about value more because I plan to leave my guns to my kids and I'd hate to think I destroyed the value on something for them.

I'm far from an expert. However, I'd think that ANYTHING done to the gun to change it from how it was originally shipped would damage value to a collector
You might consider the possibility of buying another cylinder and have it modified. That would allow you to keep the original for value and use the modified one. Just a thought.

One to think about is the rear gage, cylinder to frame and how it affects the frame lug that keeps the cylinder from dropping off of the yoke during cartridge extraction. I personally do not believe in trying to make a one caliber gun into a two caliber gun, but if you really have to......find another cylinder and yoke to have them converted. I would use a blue cylinder to tell the difference.

There's enough M25-2's in the world you don't need to ruin such a beautiful .45C to add to them. Plus, as mentioned, the plating on the cylinder would have to be re-done.

$1200 is a good offer, I gave that for my 4" nickel M25-5 three years ago with no box or other stuff.

Obviously, most of those who responded to this thread have no idea how the .45 Colt to .45 ACP conversion is done.

The extractor/ejector is machined to allow the use of .45 ACP in full moon clips. Most shooters wouldn't even notice it. .45 Colt cartridges still headspace on the outer edge of the cylinder.

I had my M25-5 cylinder machined and it still shoots well, both with .45 Colt rounds and .45 ACPs in full moon clips. Half-moon clips wouldn't work with this conversion.

Spots, unless you plan on kicking off next week, I'd go ahead and have the conversion done. Down the road, it won't affect the value much and may enhance it for the right buyer. It won't affect the nickel finish.

If you don't want to alter the cylinder, you can have a second ejector star fitted and modified. The next option would be to have a second cylinder fitted and modified.

Leave the gun As Is ...

Any modificatioins will affect the collector value .

If you want 45 ACP get a 45 ACP ...but leave this one 45 Colt ...

But ... you could and I would have a second cylinder fitted ... in 45 ACP ... that's a win-win in my book !
Now you have two calibers and still have the original 45 Colt...
but that's just me ...

My Daddy would say ... " Boy ... Don't be acting the fool !"

Listen to my Daddy ...
