Best money I ever spent . . .

Engagement ring. It was a toss up between that or a Browning Auto 5 and for the last 39 years the phrase " I should have bought the Browning" has crossed either of our lips only a few times.

The best money I ever spent was when I bought this little Appaloosa mare twenty-four years ago. She was just coming five and had only been ridden once. The good thing about that, I figured, was that she didn't have any bad habits that she'd picked up from someone else. All the bad habits she has now are the ones she's picked up from me.:)

She's twenty-nine years old now and still looks good. She's led the packstring for almost twenty-three straight years and has been one of the very best, if not the best, mountain horse I've ever owned. She walks out fast, is extremely sure-footed, keeps the mules in line, and has taught I-don't-know-how many kids and grandkids how to ride.

But, sadly, I can tell she's starting to slow down a bit. I've always believed that there's nothing that keeps a horse young better than having an honest job to do. (I also believe that goes for humans as well.) But time eventually catches up with all of us. So, now the ol' girl is pretty much relegated to giving the grandkids rides around the old homestead, but she seems to enjoy doing that.

Of all the horses and mules I've had over the years, I'll probably miss this one the most when she crosses over the rainbow bridge. On the bright side, though, when it's time for me to get "called home," I know I'll be well-mounted when I get to the other side.

Nice photos.

Nice looking mare.

My brothers old roping horse is about that age. He quit roping and tried to give the horse to me. He is still on Bro's farm with a donkey buddy doing the horse retirement thing. Coffee in the AM.......
