Hi, I have a friend who says Smith and Wesson in general makes very poor quality firearms and they are junk. He said my newly purchased Sporter II is garbage.

I have Tier1 AR15's and while the SPORT II is entry level, I find it to be a very well made rifle. I also have the Shield in both 9mm and .45 and they have never jammed or failed.

The only manufacturers I know to produce substandard are Taurus, Ruger, Century, and Hi Point Aside from that I think Smith and Wesson makes fine products

Can anybody send me a link that shows the most reliable gun manufacturers?

What do you want to do with it?

S&W isn't junk by any means. But, configuration may be less than meets your needs. That doesn't make it "junk," although it may make it inadequate for the application.

I earned my Distinguished Rifleman badge shooting a rifle built around a Smith and Wesson M&P lower receiver. Granted the only thing "Smith and Wesson" about it was the receiver.

Our use of AR pattern rifles was officially classified as "abuse" by several manufacturers. The M&P15 ran right along with the Colts. Couldn't say the same for the "name makers" who classified our use as abuse.

"Tier 1", etc is an effective marketing approach
to separating more dollars from customers.

More effective, with some customers than others.

That said, your 'friend' seems to be yanking your
chain (some will say I am, too!).

Tell your buddy his opinion is low quality, and his knowledge of AR15s is junk. I'll bet he did not back up his garbage statement with any "facts".

There are low quality, and even junk, AR15s out there, but the S&W M&P 15 and the Sport 2 ain't them. They are well made, basic AR15s.

I agree. He doesn't even own one so he has no credibility. He has a Century C39v2 and the bolt is known to mushroom. He also has a springfield M1a with investment cast reciever, that is junk to me

No they are not junk nor are Rugers....

The Ruger SR pistols are not well made and their AR5.56 does have lots of issues from jamming to fit and finish. I do have friends who bought SR9c's, SR45, and all had to send it several times back to rUger

You should listen to your buddy... Everyone knows that only Colt, Daniel Defense, BCM, and Noveske are worth owning. All the rest are junk!

After all, you own Tier One rifles, but instead of ruining them by actually shooting them, you bought a cheap S&W Sport II. I hope you never have to trust your life to that thing!

(Anyone who knows me on this board knows that the above statements are dripping with sarcasm. :D)

I would (as well) differentiate between Ruger revolvers and Ruger semis. I have had excellent service for over 30 years on several Ruger revolvers. I bought an SR45, and eventually sold it, as they never could fix it. KEY POINT - two different factories, two different groups of people.

Colt, Harley Davidson, Budweiser and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Merica!!

As Chico Marx (of the Marx Brothers) would say (as your "friend" seems to be doing), "Who you gonna believe, me or your own eyes?" :)

Your friend is certainly entitled to his opinion although it doesn't speak highly of his knowledge of ARs.

Ruger GP100 is rated as the best built revolver on the market today for withstanding to magnum rounds. Ruger SR guns are not well made? I have yet heard someone with an SR say their SR wasn't made well.

I have an SR40c and I kept it over an G27 and an XDM40c. I seriously doubt there are any $400 guns that will be better made than an SR. Yeah Ruger like any other maker does occasionally have a problem but Ruger makes it right. Yes I sent two guns back to Ruger and within a week I had it back and no more problems with the guns.

Don't even tell me S&W hasn't had it's share of problems even if the fan boys won't admit it. Barrels canted off center and cracked frames for instance. Even the 19 models had problems holding up over time. The M&P 15-22 firing off by itself. Mine hasn't so I guess I got a special made gun.

I find it funny how haters will hate something till they own one. Then what was considered junk somehow is the best available now.

There are S&W guns I didn't like but that didn't make them junk. Same things with other gun makers. Makers of expensive junk don't usually remain in business for 50-100 years and still selling hundreds of thousands of guns.

An gun dealer told me any gun is liable to fail, it is just a matter of when.

Glocks don't jam...LOL. Kimbers are junk...lol. Colt's are poorly built and don't hold up.....LOL .. Many 50-100 year old guns still shooting. I own three of them. Rugers are junk....go to a Ruger forum and see how many love their Rugers because they are quality guns. S&W IL guns are waiting to lock up by themselves...come on people get real. If anything is production man made there will be some bad examples in the thousands of good ones. That doesn't make them all poor quality.

Rugers are not on the same level as Hipoint. Jesus. Yeah many people love their rifles, but not their handguns. I have several Rugers, and have no issue with them (except my LCP... we didn't get along, so away it went).
My SP101? Wouldn't trade it for anything.

Brand snobs are so annoying....

He absolutely doesn't know jack about AR's. The Sport II, I found the fit and finish was just as pristine as my Windham SRC, and a whole lot better than my Colt LE6940. (Colt's fit is loose and lots of blemishes).

The Sport II also had a trigger that had some creep, but smoother than my Windham, a whole lot better than my Colt, but nowhere near as good as my Windham with a Gissile SSA-E, but for what I paid for, the Sport with the melonite finish, dust cover, staked gas key, chrome chamber, couldn't ask for anything better.

I agree on the GP100 totally. I have it in 22 and 357. Also some other revolvers dating back to 1976. Outstanding firearms and service. That CS group goes above and beyond for the most minor of issues.

But my SR45 made "junk" the highest compliment it could be offered. Four times back to the factory, new mags, slide, barrel, everything but the frame replaced, and it still could not crawl up to deserving "junk". I sold it to a guy for spare parts.

What's your buddy's firearm of choice?
