I have been hit a coupe of times recently on an old mobile home used for storage and a small shop. About two months ago two 15-16 year old heathens started this process. One has since moved back out of state.

I'm sure more than one was responsible for the last heist. They're cherry picking what is there and it isn't much. I found a LED mini lamp about an inch & 1/2 long that had a swivel on the end. I'm guessing that was hunting type headwear that they are using for a light source inside of the buildings as they aren't currently hooked-up to power.

The one remaining kid that I caught earlier rides a school bus past my property. Naturally I suspect him being involved though this could've escalated by word of mouth. Young man telling about all the abandoned "treasure" laying around.

When the young man and buddy broke in before they pried the door to the mobile home, took a pry bar and peeled back the tin on the shop because they couldn't defeat the lock and pried the side glass off a 1981 truck, busting the glass and destroying its frame(they seem to think this is a quieter glass breaking process).

Fast forward to the last few days and someone threw a piece of wood thought the mobile home door glass, broke a master lock off of the shop and took a few items, but not much so I'm still thinking kids.

I replace the lock and just cover up the hole in the door glass. Two days later they come back, sometime after midnight, and break the new lock off the shed. I guess they thought I'd put something new/valuable inside. Didn't need to bust the mobile home door coz I hadn't fixed it yet and rammed my gate from the street.

The gate held though the pipe frame bent like a horseshoe so they back up, get out and bust the lock securing the chain latch. Open the gate, drive down and load up some junk, leave a empty insulin syringe pack and a heavy gauge speaker 2- wire about 16" long.

I'm guessing they fell out of the truck w/mud grips when the thugs opened their truck door, I don't know. Anywho, they have become quite brazen for no more "booty" than they are snagging. None of the stuff taken was worth much. Couple of hundred dollars worth.

The odd thing was this last time they took an old blanket from inside the MH and hung it on the window that is next to the entry door. I always left this window open and it's the old two pane style that swings out when you crank it open. (Early to mid 1970's MH)

It appears to me that they are marking this spot. The window's screen wasn't cut. They went in and picked up this blanket and took it outside drapping it over the open window.

They are walking past stuff they could steal and taking time for this. I'm thinking that if the one remaining young man, that I originally caught, was a part of this then he might have done that so he could see it from his school bus as he rode by.

I don't know that he was a part of it and the storage/sheds are about 450' off the main road. When I first saw the blanket, from a distance, it looked like someone trying to crawl into the window or as if someone was on a ladder.

The level of destruction has certainly went up from prying a door and a truck glass to throwing lumber though glass and trying to bust a gate by vehicular force. Of course the empty insulin syringe wrapper sheds some light.

If this slow(special ed) kid wasn't a part and didn't mark it to show his buddies on the bus then is it being marked as a easy hit/treasure map much like hobos used to mark various places?

They closed the MH door and the bent 10' pipe-gate while wrapping the chain through sans lock on their way out.

Feel free to ask anything or add to w/comment.

They didn't come last night, yet I'm sure they will continue until they have relieved me of everything they want or can sell.

I probably would have given it all to them if they had agreed to take everything and clean-up the property.

Go down to the local sporting goods house and buy a trail camera and set it up in a tree aimed at your place. LEO love video evidence.

I caught kids TP-ing my trees on my game camera. Here's a still shot from a video the camera shot via Infrared.

My daughter's buddies. They were up on a ladder in my trees the next afternoon after a threat to send the short film to their parents. Word at the high school was "How stupid! Of course 'Combat Chuck' has night vision security!"

It sounds like you need more than one camera you could go camping nearby and wait for them. Make sure you let them tear the place up a bit before you surprise them. You should also get a silent alarm with a cell phone backup and there are ways of using portable power that can last a few days. --good luck on that project--

I'm no expert, but I would guess they hung the blanket up so that you couldn't see flashlights inside.

The deputy sez that doesn't happen 'round here.

It started w/local neer-do-well that moved here from out of state. He came by once a week wanting odd job work and I told him when it turned cool I'd pay him to rake leaves. Seemed like a nice kid that had a somewhat rough life. That young man and family has been gone a month. His buddy, who I suspect as the main influence, transfers school busses 3/4 a mile up the road. When they originally teamed up the buddy just got off of one bus and started walking to the others house instead of transferring to his own bus. The buddy lives about eight miles from here. The school district uses this elementary school property as a staging/transfer area also. They might use other satellite schools the same way. I think half the county goes to this school as it services a lot of the rural area.

Deputy sez there's nuttin' much I can do unless I catch them in the act or they have something w/serial numbers. Real/even semi-pro thieves wouldn't mess w/my junk. It was just odd n ends, for the most part, that ended up in the MH where I moved it almost 30 years ago.

I find it odd that they would try to bust the gate open w/truck, yet close the door & gate. It also makes no sense to me that they would keep coming back for a few items. A half or 3/4 ton truck and two trips would haul it all.

Kinda looks like some local, young wanna-be thugs in training have enlisted the help of a more seasoned hand that uses smash n grab to support his meth junkie lifestyle.

I'm only about 600' from this property, but unless you happened to be outside or looked down there at the right time you're not going to notice.

There has also been a lot more people moving into the area for many years. You know the name of that tune. For several years walking distance punk kids have been stealing scrap from the AC place next door along w/gasoline. They pried the back door to his shop once. His shop actually has some stuff that isn't old junk.

Guess it's my turn to do my part and make some civic contributions to the less fortunate, chemically enhanced, future wards of the state...

Hiding flash light might be the status quo. It's a wooded area and probably wouldn't be noticed, but maybe they're trying to "go by the book".

Might have to snag an infrared cam. I could hide-out and maybe catch them, however if I'm really dealing w/thugs instead of kids then a firefight might ensue. It's possible at this stage that there's a mixture of age groups. I'd hate to shoot some kid that was caught up in a moment of youthful indiscretion. A pos mainliner is another story, yet at night it can be hard to distinguish.

Thanks for the input gents. Sadly, we all know that once they finish that off they'll be looking to move onto other property close by. I have a much larger shop by the hacienda and I can already hear the gears turning in their head.

About 9 yrs. ago a "neer do well" guy and his 11 year old son moved a couple doors down. This guys brother owns the house he lives in or he'd be homeless along with the kid. Since day one the kid was trouble, breaking windows with a BB gun, and lots of vandalism. About age 13-14 the kid started burglaring homes along with a small tribe of associates. Neighbors got tired and singled him out. As a result the kid spent several stints in juvenile facilities. During these stints he hooked up with genuine gang bangers. Upon his last release he was informed he would go to big man's jail next time as he's 17 now. His totally useless scab on humanity father, wisely sent him to live with his mother out of state. The father says the kid's new gang buddy's were out to kill him. There's no point to my post other than to say: who's ruling the roost here anymore? The kids?

I'd guess that closing the door & gate might be a ploy to delay discovery.

It has been my experience that a lot of thieving in done by people who have normal reasons to be in the neighborhood. Kids, friends of friends, day labor, & such. They use these daylight excursions to scout for their night time activities.

At one time in the history a mini-rock festival over ran the neighborhood. Shortly there-after a rash of B&Es.

Years ago, a friend of mine... Vietnam service Green Beret, Cop... everybody thought he had a screw loose... The result is nobody messed with him. Was it an act? I'll never know?

I might suggest security lights with motion sensors and a cam. If you catch them at the old mobile home with the useless junk then your real workshop with good tools may be safe. After things settle down you can move the lights and cam to the real shop for future protection. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Hook an electric fence charger to the gate. PITA to insulate everything from ground but watching it all happen on a trail-cam will be worth the effort. Solar/battery powered chargers work but AC powered provide a better life lesson. Jim

Years ago an aquaintance had dogs getting into his garbage. He raised his trash cans (55 gal drums) on tires. Laid a hunk of aircraft landing mat on the ground in front of it. Wied it to 110. He run off a bunch of dogs. Had to get a new garbage man however.

I can personally vouch for the following: Getting a battery powered livestock electric fence charger. Mine was a 6 volt model. Wife had a stud mini-horse... he would break out to go visit the mare pony way on the other side of the property. I had long since tired of buying 6V batteries... I lugged out an old car battery. He stuck his nose on it & it knocked his ass down. After the third try he left the friggin fence alone.

The only thing is this will piss off the intruders. Then they'll really damage something.

Spray them in the eyes with ? WASP SPRAY ?
Seems like the infared camera is the best way to end this situation.
It is unwise to allow them to continue their visits, In this world today,,, If they get hurt breaking in or out,,, It's on your property and most likely would be your fault in the eyes of an attorney...

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. .

"I'd guess that closing the door & gate might be a ploy to delay discovery."

Me too except for the 10', pipe gate having been bent into almost a semi-circle. It gives the appearance of some type of ram/post mounted vertically to the back of a truck. The pipe gate bent evenly from bottom to top. I remember hearing about some guys a few years ago that had a post of some type in the bed of a truck and were backing up to garage doors for fast, easy entry. I always thought it referred to a fence post laying in the bed of a truck, but I guess mounted vertical would be better for the collapse of a door off it's runners/defeating weak gates. However, they were primarily operating out in the rural county during the day.

Of course they knew no one was living there, my next door neighbor is a business, across the street is a recent pawn shop, behind me is a part time creek and full time woods along w/another business.

"It has been my experience that a lot of thieving in done by people who have normal reasons to be in the neighborhood. Kids, friends of friends, day labor, & such. They use these daylight excursions to scout for their night time activities."

It had been 8 weeks since I caught the two slow kids trying to"fix-up" an old truck sitting in, what used to be, a field. The local kids/scouting party came through early am and I spot it then the wrecking crew comes through two days later early am.

Yesterday I found two syringes up by the gate. Didn't examine them that closely. They had the needle protector on.

If I booby-trap anything it'll come back and bite me in the butt, I'm sure. This has advanced from upper junior/lower high school kids going on a "treasure" hunt laying claim to "abandoned" property.

When I caught the two kids that was their line.
"We thought this was abandoned."

Their concept of property tax leaned into some type of hybrid/free range concept w/dash of their own version of Manifest Destiny.

" why don't you spend the evening in there and wait for them? Catch them in the act. "

I don't mind the armed excursion on the property, but I can't see two months of bivouac trying to catch, what is basically low-life locals w/even lower/more seasoned connections.

"Hook an electric fence charger to the gate."

How about one of those electronic fence chargers hooked up to the vandalized truck after I pull it up the drive to block further vehicles? It's already grounded by the tires.

As a side note a buddy needed his dogs to stay in the back yard so I installed an electronic charger. I accidently laid a piece of fence wire on the charged wire and thought my heart was gonna stop/having a heart attack. It fired me up enough that I made sure that didn't happen again.

There's a little half-rectangle road, about a half of mile worth, that connects to the main road. The locals live there and it wouldn't surprise me if my stuff is over there. There isn't much left for them to pilfer. I guess I should wait till they're through checking their x-mas list before I start dismantling.

I had already given consideration to taking a backhoe and pulling the walls and roof off leaving the leveled steel frame on blocks. I'm still barely in the county so I can tear 'em down and stack the material in a clearing. I don't have the equipment to drag the wood & AL to the landfill.

They aren't very thorough though. They snagged an old Ben Franklin style cast iron stove. They left the burner door, a leg and a round piece that laid on top.

There's also an old 32-35 inch TV w/vcr. sitting on top that they didn't touch. Nobody watches vcr. and that big screen tube is a little heavy for the boys. It still works, but would need a converter box.

Sad to think of the times I watched the old school big screen and now it doesn't even rate for cherry-pickin'...

Do you think if I take the old washer n dryer up to the street w/For Sale sign attached that they would stop by and haul them off?

5 gallons of gas and a quart of water?

Howdy,
Maybe you could leave them a five gallon gas can with gas and a good dose of water in it?
Motion detector and lights?
Bomb in a flashlight wired to the off/on switch?
Just kidding about the bomb. I'm not above the tainted gas thing at all.
Good luck
Mike

It's no loss the them is they did not get all the stove parts as they're just selling it for scrap. Everey so often a highly intellegent crook steals copper wire... sometimes HV cables. They like summer cabins as they can steal the copper piping. The local beach community is all plastic pipe now...

I like the gas can idea but they might try to burn the place instead. I recall a stupid criminal not too long ago. Doused inside a car with gas... threw in matches but it wouldn't go. Stuck his arm in the door & "flicked his bic". The responding Police, Fire, Rescue found him some distance away where he landed & put his *ss out.

Legend has it a guy I know wood was disappearing at night. Claims to have bored a deep hole in a log, filled with black powder & plugged... put back on the wood pile. The tale goes that someone's wood stove blew up. Supposedly the thief admitted stealing the wood & the aquaintance denied being missing any fire wood. I dunno if I believe it.

A truck with a battering ram on the back would be conspicious. I wonder what it is? A tow trucK? Around here stolen tow trucks have been used to remove safe's & ATMs.

These premises guarded by shotgun 3 nights a week... you guess which 3.

I like the tainted gas/booby trap log ideas/tales as they make interesting contemplation. However, I don't really wish to get into a tit for tat w/young hoods. I was giving serious consideration to barbed wire snares though.

I'm sure I could drive a wrecker through that gate. Maybe they used some type of utility bed like an old telephone repair truck. All I know for sure is that they had at least one mud grip tire.

Funny that you would mention that they might burn the place. The business next to the pawn shop was torched a few weeks ago. I joked that maybe when they finished grazing that they would light-up the two old mobile homes and save me from tearing them down.

That little bitty pot belly stove wouldn't bring much for scrap but, I guess w/economy soft meth prices are down.

New construction gets tagged for condensers & copper around here.

Except for ramming/pushing the gate it still sounds like kids & mostly local ones. Two window ac units, new water heater, new standard size plastic Jacuzzi tub were left. If I went through the same trouble to drive a vehicle there I might have left the water heater, but I think I'd have snagged the little single tub Jacuzzi. The motor n pump probably weighs more than the pvc tub & pipe.

I would have grabbed the small oak dresser as well yet I'm not a crook.

The old MH, came w/avocado appliances, was a shell w/interior walls already knocked-out. They were cheap storage and at one time I had planned to rebuild/renovate one of them for living quarters. I had power, gas & a septic tank leftover from an ex who had moved on & off the property. A bud gave me the newer model that had already been mostly stripped and was ready for restoration.

With the roof and walls gone they both would make a fair gun platform. There's a flock of geese that fly between two small lakes at treetop level.

They are both on brick piers so what do you figure the odds are that the steel frame wouldn't warp if the young thugs torched the shells?

I was contemplating your dilema... Stop signs around here wear a thick coat or grease all around or occasionally never-sieze. One kid threw a stolen stop sign into Dad's fancy ride & ruined the upholstry... wanted the town to pay for it... The town said "see you in court" & they prefered that Jr not get arrested... that was it.
An interesting idea if you do not drive in is a tank trap. A covered ditch that will bottom the suspension of a vehicle leaving the wheels dangling. I own a backhoe, so such ideas are practical for me...
I had a barn that was built over a 56 foot MH. (Reportedly planned as dry storage but once the sun no longer hit it everything inside got moldy.) I dismantled it to a deck... (It took me years) recycled all the metal. I had to tube all the tires... God knows how long it had been in there... I cut open the end of the barn & hauled it out. Local junk guy said if I could put it in the street, he'd take it. I held him to it & we blocked traffic so he could make the turns.

Seems like the tainted gas idea is just for spite.
FIlm what is going on and send pics to local PD...
If you are in an area with poison ivy, You could carefully cut a big hunk of vine, Rub it all over everything they may be interested in and they will get the ivy real bad sooner or later, But so may you.
Remember the drippings from a vine are nearly 100x stronger than the leaf,,,, But what good does it do to get to stay away...
PIcs and PD is your only real defence.
