CCW: Keep one in the pipe?

Ok let the flames begin! I hope the Moderators do not ban/bar me!

If you are irresponsible in carrying one in the chamber, then why carry at all? If the auto is not reliable and safe with one in the chamber then maybe a different type of firearm is prudent!
"whoops it just went off and some innocent was wounded or maimed get real if this an issue maybe something needs to change. How about a Louisville slugger?
Not trying to upset anyone but geez we have to be real here If the auto is questionable how about a DAO revolver. Is the newest small time auto with 50 rounds needed if ya can not use it when the need arises?

Well said, CS. It's all simple, really:
Number 1: Carry a gun that's ready to shoot. That means one in the chamber. An empty chamber is an empty gun, and I don't care which "expert" says different.
Number 2: If you can't do number 1, Don't carry that gun. Period. Find one that you can.
Number 3: If you can't or won't practice to do Number 1, Don't Carry Any Gun.

Not that long ago, a guy got jumped by a couple of room temperature IQ thugs while pumping gas in a Dayton gas station.

They hit him from front and rear simultaneously. By his own admission, if he hadn't had a round chambered, they would have overcome him.

I'm not betting my life that violent assailants are going to LET me chamber a round.

If somebody is so afraid of their gun that they carry with an empty chamber, they need to do one or more of the following:
  • Get some training.
  • Get a better gun.
  • Find a better carry method.
  • Stop carrying.

I have 4 pistols in my carry rottion;1-Sig P229, 2-Sig P6, 3-FNP40, 4 -Beretta 92fs Centurian the only one with manuel safety is the Centurian and when I carry it I carry safety off. Every gun in my rotation has one in the pipe at all times.

Good. More for me. That ND is the fault of the gun owner and his cheap-*** holster. If you don't practice trigger safety, you're going to get burned. The trigger guard is there for a reason, son.

More for me as well. I have owned 22 of them over the years (still have all but two of those) and have carried one every day for two decades now, no plans to change. ;)

The problem with Condition 3 is in a sudden fight situation your off hand is going to busy fending off your attacker(s) while your digging your weapon out from concealment! This is no time to be trying to rack a round in the chamber!! It can be done but only if you've trained yourself intensely with the draw and rack system like the Israelis use. But still your tied up with both hands busy trying to prep the weapon while your getting pummeled or worse!
Just chamber a round, apply the safety (if one is present) and go forth.
Because remember there's no warning or signal before a fight starts! Dale

An unloaded gun is an expensive club.

Okay, listen up you meatheads. You really expect to always have time to rack a round? If you do you better do more research. ALWAYS have one in the chamber, keep the safety off or on according to your preference. But never give the bad guy a chance to shoot you while you are trying to rack a round. Or else carry a revolver.

Okay,I try very hard not to get drawn into these conversations cause they could go on forever and everybody has their own ideas. We live in an age of texting while driving, blaming the bartender for the DUI,believing everything on the internet and television.A little effort, knowledge and common sense are required especially when carrying a weapon for self defense.A little different if you will than buying a cellphone or a computer.Without one in the chamber it is a club.If you are not competent or confident enough to carry one in the chamber then maybe you should buy some mace.Cause in my opinion you are going to be some kind of statistic either way.

Hi all

My 2cents here. I have a Shield .40 cal. While its in my IWB holster, and the trigger is being guarded by it, I keep safety off. I leave it in the holster when I put it in my drawer at night. When I need to draw the gun and i'm not going to shoot something, I first engage the safety then drop mag and eject it and tripple rack the slide to make sure its empty before I clean it. I have a glock and when I carry it, its always in the holster so the trigger is always protected. Safe or unsafe, can you 100% remember to keep your finger off the trigger? No safety is fine if you can do that. Otherwise, please use the safety or get some pepper spray maybe.

I'm a civilian... I carry my auto with one in the tube and a J BUG... two pocket knives and an aluminum bat behind the seat. Jus kiddin... I don't have a bat!

Blessings,
Hog

You meant aluminum foil HAT.:D

Oh yea... the HAT! How could I forgot the HAT? I can throw it as well as Odd Job! (For all you pups out there, that's a reference to the heavy man in the James Bond novel/movie "Goldfinger"... and no comments from the Peanut Gallery in regard to that name, either...)

Here's another one: my brother has a (later model) .357 magnum. Six round revolver, right? He puts in FOUR!!!

His logic is that he doesn't want one in the chamber, and he keeps the next chamber empty in case he pulls the trigger, pulling it out of the holster.

Military veteran: sometimes you just can't tell anyone how to live right. Eh?

That's a first! I hadn't heard that one before!...that would be a quadruple-action trigger (double action X2)

Best one I have heard is carrying a blank in the chamber. If you have time to rack the slide your good, if the gun magically goes off your alright, and if you dont have time just pull the trigger and pray the gun cycles the hot round in. Theres some people with some interesting ideas out there. Ill just carry mine ready to drop 'bad guys'
