Changing out 629 Cylinder...

There may be some info in this forum about this but I'll ask it again; I wanna replace the cylinder on my 629-1 with one of the "unfluted" variety. Is this easy to do, idiot-proof and where do I look for one? Just curious about the timing/indexing, etc... advise please, TW

You can do it. I found a drop in mod 29 cylinder for a model 58 conversion to 44 mag. It turned, locked up great. Had my gunsmith check it over and he said just because it matches up to the hand, ratches etc, doesn't mean the cylinder holes are in perfect alignment with the barrel bore. Luckily, mine did, but it needs to be checked.

Sometimes the crane or cylinder gap need to be adjusted too. Sometimes you get lucky and have a drop in type situation.

If the cylinder has been fitted, it may just work fine. Beware, there are two different cylinder lengths used. Dean

Check the 'Bay. I've picked up a couple 629 fluted cylinders to fit to a 27-5/29-?/629 frankengun that's about done. Unfortunately the frame/barrel combo I bought didn't come with a yoke so the yoke/cylinder assembly from a 629 will need to get fitted by a pro.

Didn't 629's come around after the cylinder was lengthened? I can't remember the order of the changes off the top of my head.

According to the SW "book", the 629-1 cylinder was slightly shortened (from the 629 no dash), I'm guessing to compensate for eliminating the recessed feature of the 629-1 cylinders???

I noticed today that Midway has some of the fluted and unfluted cylinders for the 629.....
