Cleanest Generic 22 Ammo

Without getting into match ammo and such, what do you feel is the cleanest burning 22 ammo available?

I agree. All 22 ammo is a bit "sooty", but CCI seems the cleanest burning of the readily available "non boutique" ammo.

I will add to the vote ... CCI in any of their flavors is always a good choice .

I only use CCI SV, but all .22 rimfire is dirty.

Another vote for CCI Standard Velocity for clean accurate fun ammo. About as good as it gets without stepping up to $8/50 box ammo.

CCI Mini-Mag is my first choice.

Copper plated is significantly better than Lead.

But for cheaper generic, I like Federal in the Bottle.

If by generic you mean inexpensive bulk ammo give CCI Blazer a try. In terms of being clean burning I cannot see any difference between Blazer and CCI standard velocity. Lead bullets will produce more fouling that plated ones though. My 22 revolver develops sticky extraction with any ammo that has lead bullets so I typically shoot MiniMags through it.

A lot of guns like my S&W 41 and to a lesser degree my S&W Compact are not as reliable with standard velocity as they are with high velocity Blazer. In the 41 I find the standard velocity a little more accurate but that small increase in accuracy is not worth the loss of reliability.

Worst I have seen was Remington Thunderbolts. Not just fouling but leading in a gun that did not lead with other brands. Must have been soft lead in the bullets when I tried them. Maybe current production is better than the stuff I tried years ago but I never gave them a second chance and have no plans to.

Basically anything from CCI, they also make a coated lead load called "clean".

I've yet to have a problem with .22 LR plain lead bullets and I've tried many such ammos along with the plated variety. I go with what's most accurate. For the price, CCI SV (plain lead) is hard to beat in most rifles and handguns.

For generic...any of the bulk pack Federals even through the pandemic years etc. Even CCI was lacking in those years somewhat. Lately most everything is ok...cept Win

Stay as far-away as possible from anything made from bat-guano in Mexico (Aquila) or from Eastern Europe (graphite).
