Summary:
Washington needs to pass gun laws that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and other prohibited purchasers and keep military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines off of our streets. To do this, they should pass laws that will:

1. Require criminal background checks for ALL gun sales, including private sales.
2. Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
3. Make gun trafficking a federal crime.

(Proposed by: Mayors Against Illegal Guns.)

Current Stats (as of this posting):
48,757 Support
7,821 Oppose

All of the other gun control bills I'm seeing on Popvox have been pretty well crushed. I'm not sure why this one has so much support, but we should fight it tooth and nail. I've already written my representatives to oppose this, as I can't see any "common sense" in the proposal.

All of these polls are ridiculous. We do not live in a democracy, and thus, the opinions and whims of the populous regarding certain issues is null and void. The 2nd amendment specifically forbids the enactment of any laws that infringe on the right to bear arms. The point of a constitution is to specify the scope of federal powers and to specifically limit them in certain domains. The point is that even is 299 million people were for a certain law regarding guns, the government has no power to enact such laws. Democracy is tyranny BY the masses, and the founders of this country knew that, hence the constitution. The whole point is to protect the rights of a minority from being trampled by the majority.

We have enough laws currently on the books to curb violent crime. Biden states we don't have time to enforce these current laws. If that's the case why are we seeking more laws?

Doc, I think MAIG and the Brady bunch had put that up before Sandy Hook, and it was really only publicized through their channels. Face it, not too many gun rights people were very worried about new laws before the Newtown tragedy.

Andrew, I agree with you in principle, but as long as we have the argument of "reasonable restriction" it's going to be hard to ignore any new legislation being proposed. And, I guess you don't realize that the purpose of Popvox is to get your views on issues directly to your senators and representatives. That is something that can make a difference. They will be voting on these new restrictions, and using any and all means at our disposal to get our message to the lawmakers is critical to our success or failure in our efforts to defend the Second Amendment.

I was invited this week to a birthday party for someone in the local news media. When some people learned who I am, two guests suggested some common sense gun laws.

1. It should be illegal for anyone to possess more than ten cartridges. (Makes sense to me. That is ten times the amount that Barney Fife was allowed to carry)

2. There should be a 5 minutes delay between the time a trigger is pulled and the gun discharges. That will give the victim 5 minutes to leave the area and the shooter 5 minutes to change his mind. (How do you respond to a suggestion like this?)

Both these people were sober. Unfortunately, both also vote. Unfortunately, I have to be nice to people like these two. I have to smile and say, "That's an idea to consider."

habit of changing peoples personal opinions in short order.
