NY gun legislation signed

If you want the states in charge of your rights, you'd better pay attention to your state legislatures.

Agreed. NYS is almost always gonna have a democratic governor and NYS a democratic Mayor, but there have been exceptions. In the mid 90's George Pataki won governor due to the economy and high crime. Guiliani won the mayor race for the same reason. Crime was through the roof. It was the perfect storm for the republicans and the weather report now is very similar to back then. I cannot imagine ANY gun owner, from the FUDD duck hunter to the wanna-be SEAL, voting for the governor who signed this bill.

Last week, a bodega owner was assaulted on camera and defended himself, stabbing the one who assaulted him (career criminal, of course). The DA, who has basically opened the jails and gotten rid of bail, charged him with Murder 2. The public went nuts. Even die hard liberals are questioning that.

Sorry you liked how it was for you. Think about the millions in your state who weren't so privileged.

I never said I liked it. It was a hassle from the beginning. I simply lived with it. I had too many reasons not to move.

The point of my comment was that I was happy that the Supreme court ruled the way they did. But I wish they had not taken the case because it is now worse than ever, and its only the beginning.

As a former state resident of NY the Safe Act (SA) was the straw that broke me. The day of retirement was also moving day. Many residents made a conscIous decision to not comply with the SA. Remember the Ballistic Finger Print data-base, millions of tax payers money spent with ZERO crimes solved. Laws only apply to those that abide by them and not criminals. This is just grandstanding by the politicians more camera time to get their faces flashed on television. Incarceration works, and not skid-bids from the DA's Office, if you want to use a firearm in the commission of a criminal act go to jail and stay in a cell for years not days.
Listen, outside of NYC, anybody could get a pistol permit. Depending on your county and the judge, you may only get a permit to own and not to carry. This new law effectively means the carry permit that they will have to issue you at much greater expense of time and money is useless in 95% of the state, so the only people who are going to benefit from this are the people who live in the five boroughs of NYC. There are about 9 million people in NYC. There are 13 million throughout the rest of the state. Those 13 million were basically assured of getting a pistol to own and likely carry pretty much anywhere they wanted except NYC. Now everyone can get one and carry it nowhere. I'm not seeing a victory here for anybody other than the residents of NYC.

This wasn't a win at all. And if the court can rule that the state can't make a person show cause to be granted their constitutional right, they should have ruled the state can't put up 100 road blocks to exercising it.

They really messed with the gun laws...

Changed the definitions of 'Rifle' and 'Shotgun' to include muzzle loaders regardless of vintage and ignition system.
They'll have to be sold on a 4473 & NICS.
With the current law being 'All sales/transfers of ownership must go thru an FFL dealer',,these will as well.

They appointed the NYSP as the Point of Contact for the NICS check.
It has been a direct call to the FBI/NICS. Now the call will go to the NYSP instead.
Not unlike some other States that do it that way,,BUT
This new law puts a 'Fee' on each NICS check call to NYSP.
Amt yet to be determined and it will be reviewed yearly for possible increases.
Dealers will be calling the same # for ammunition sales background checks as well as NICS checks for firearms.
Background checks for the ammo sales go into effect as well.

Pass the fee on to the customer of course. That on top of the fee they usually charge already to do a 'transfer'.

The 'antique hi-cap magazines (their wording)' (50y/o and older) that were grandfathered in and allowed to be owned in the orig SAFE Act in 2014,,,that's been done away with.
Those are now no longer legal.
Orig mfg 15rd M1 carbine magazines were the most common of these.
You still couldn't load them with more than 8rds (?),,but the magazines were legal and didn't have to be permanetly blocked to the 8 (or 10) rd capacity.
Now they are straight out illegal in 15rd form.

There are pages and pages of changes, None good.

I love my home, my local fishing spots and my magnificent cabin in the mountains, to m,ention a few things.

We looked at FL, the Carolinas, Tennesee, etc, etc. Some had some of my requirements, but none had all. Some had factors that I simply would not stand.

I absolutely won't let any politician force me to move. It's not always greener, yada, yada....

Doing what's best for one's self is a unique individual/family personal decision what works best for you may not be a great fit for others. Myself it was time to leave. Along with that yada-yada (taxes-Winters) maybe you are just content, after all it is you're decision however justified. From Lake Chautauqua to the 9 summits in the Adirondack Mnts with another 40 still to climb New York will only be a great place to visit in my eyes.

I have friends that complained about taxes and then found that their boat and camper were taxed where they went and it wasn't actually cheaper. Or, higher utilities and it all equaled out.

I live where the snow load is 1/2 of what the weather dept. reports for the local major city.

I have other friends that bought a beautiful home, only to have all his mature trees decimated buy a hurricane the first year.

Don't even let me talk about tornadoes......LOL.

I am an anomaly. I am satisfied. That's part of the problem today. Nobody can stand what they have and want something different. Maybe poor planning? Maybe poor parenting?

The moral of the story is that we are all Americans and we have the right to chose whatever we like. Some are stuck on ONE SINGLE topic and don't look at the big picture. But that's all OK.

What makes me mad is that some people bash a certain area. Personally, I think living in **** sucks, but if that's what you like, its OK with me.

But the government is here to help.

One of my family members in NYC feels threatened by people like us legally carrying guns with a permit, but not criminals illegally carrying guns. I have long suspected that there is a streak of insanity that runs through my family.

Lots of new hoops to jump thru. Lots of time. Lots of people needed to do all the tasks.

I recently re-certified my permit. It was due the end of Feb. I mailed it the beginning of Jan. It took them 4 months to complete. In other words it was 2 months overdue.

I would imagine that the State Police are as angry as anyone.

I doubt they care at all. They're public employees doing their time towards a pension. Doesn't matter how that time is filled. If the stack of applications is just as high at quitting time as it was when they started their tour, it means absolutely nothing to them. That's basic civil service mentality. "It will still be there tomorrow".

Some might even be happy. More slots in a Monday-Friday day shift with weekends off, detail. Patrolling the highways gets old, fast.

Borderboss, I do get your point but a carry permit in New York State is pretty much useless now. The list of places where you can't carry makes it impractical to even leave your house with a handgun. The only hope is that Hochul gets voted out and this gets reversed, or struck down in the courts.

It won't get reversed with the NY legislature, ever, as long as NYC is attached to the rest of NYS.

The hope is the courts. Then again, they will just come up with something to work around any positive decision.

Interesting fact I just read (don't know if its true or not). Of all the crimes, shootings, murders, drive-bys and robberies in NY with a handgun, not one single one was committed by a person that legally owned the handgun and had a valid NYS pistol permit.
