There must have been a mistake when I was naturalized. I never got the "allow retail to screw you" memo.

Here in Central NJ several discount grocers-Sav-A-Lot, Grocery Outlet, the German chains Aldi and Lidle have opened up, doing a good business. "Heard" stories about "added ingredients" in the off brand baking mixes, etc.
For at home consumption I have often found the off-brand sodas just as satisfying, for entertaining/sharing I buy name brands, likewise when I bake to share, use name brands. Though one time years ago I baked oatmeal cookies for a social event, 3 full tins, when I went to get one there weren't even crumbs left. At another event I made popcorn with store brand ingredients-same thing.
In one town near me there were complaints about someone with a chicken coop on their property, it was found there was no ordinance prohibiting it. My church has a small garden, every years we donate hundreds of pounds of vegetables.

There's another trick, Steve, the "online pricing" gig. Display with a large price marker a couple of bucks cheaper than usual. In small print, that's the online price, the regular price is $x.xx. Cute stunt. I also enjoy perusing the 'last chance' display, some items are not damaged or post-dated. Monday I picked up 4 KitKat bars at .94 each. Regular price is $2.89. For a KitKat bar...

We mostly shop at a neighborhood (smaller) Walmart for groceries and buy the heck out of their store brands. Bran flakes, sourdough and rye breads, dairy, chips, soda and even candy bars. No problem with veggies, beef is OK enough. Prices beat Publix by far and we keep watch for the yellow tags on product that should move that day esp. chicken. Never an issue we'll trim, clean, separate and freeze. Their frozen pizza has more crust than I like but loaded with meat and by adding the peppers and onions I dice and freeze makes for an quick, easy weeknight meal.
One of favorite activities is eating from the wood fired smoker in back yard. When smoking baby backs, fish or other pork items always had enough to treat the neighbors. Ribs and pork has almost doubled in the last several years and simply can't afford it anymore, which takes a lot of the pleasure out of barbecuing/grilling.
