Dang! Anyone price a pick-up lately?

My days of buying new cars and trucks are behind me. I may even be done with new motorbikes. I was hoping to get a few more years and another 100k out of my Astro, but the powerplant pooped the bed without warning. My mechanic didn't want to replace the engine, but he did sell me a sweet little Ranger. Almost 20 years old, almost a bench seat, tiny little cab, new brakes, brake lines, alternator, hoses, and belts. Runs like a top, 22mpg, not all that great but good enough, and it's no exaggeration. Manual trans and 2WD, so right now it has 300 lb of sand over the rear axle until the snow is gone for good.

It probably won't pull my 3-bike trailer, but it ought to pull my little Holsclaw with two dirt bikes, or one in the bed. $1500 seemed more than fair to me.

I replaced my 2000 Jimmy with a three year old Trail Blazer a couple years ago. We get the GM discount but don't buy new either.
I was shocked at what trucks sell for now and passed up on pickups fast too.
Another thing I learned is they don't deal as well either as they used to. I take my wife along for bargaining as she does well. I have to laugh as I recall her climbing a light pole to show flaws on the roof rack on the Jimmy which we bargained down well. I don't think you get deals like that anymore.

<RANT>Who needs a $75k pickup truck? At that point you are just showing off.</RANT>

Have people lost their freakin' minds? What will that truck due that the F150 STX not do while costing half the price?

LOL :D

Depends on what you do with your truck. ;)

My truck is a Dodge 3500 diesel. I pull 16,000 pounds cross country to work. I have the MegaCab and I wish I had the remote rear window because I sure as heck can't reach it back there. The cab is almost 8 feet long alone! But I put six men in there and haul them to work.

This is all stuff a F150 could never do.

My next truck will be even bigger! I have 160,000 joyous miles on my Cummins diesel, but the Dodge sucks to be truthful. Of course I had to replace the tranny, the stock one was weak pulling just the truck, let alone the trailer.

Next truck I want:

Besides our car I somehow ended up with two nice trucks. A 2000 GMC sierra stepside that has my trailer and quad pretty much permantly hooked up to it and the wifes 2001 silverado. At times I have been tempted to sell both and get a nice 4WD. But then both run well and both are relatively low mileage. So maybe I MIGHT get like $13,000 out of the pair of them together and lay out another $35,000 + to get a new truck? Being retired and liveing off my 401k, to get the 35K, I would have to tap the IRA to the tune of at least 45K to 50K to end up with the 35 K plus give up two nice trucks. Naw, I dont think so.

I paid less for my first house (in the VA suburbs outside DC) than the new pickups are going for now...........ain't progress fun?

I managed to find a 1 year old when I was buying.
I carry a small popip camper on my 1/2 ton that the previous owner had to sell because it was too much for his Tundra so it appears they are not quite trucks yet.

Bought a new Ford f-350 4x4 last August and paid just over 40k, XLT package but not much more. I qualified for 0% financing which helped a little but could not figure out why dealers would not dicker for my business. I went to three different ones and got the same price.
Turns out that with the internet buying option prices are pretty much fixed. You can sit at the computer and order or buy off the lot and never leave your house until you pick it up. They must feel that "lot dickering" would hurt their business with the internet buyers.

They should offer better deals for those who are willing to get off the computer chair.

I bought a F150 couple years ago when the ecoboost came out. Really like the truck, pulls our camper a lot better than my previous Nissan Titan did. I would have loved to have purchased a diesel but WOW. If ya get a chance head over to youtube and search F150 torture test.

That will we be the next engine I get not sure about what
F150 I will get but it will have that engine for sure.

I looked at a test summary but the numbers were off... They were talking how they did 300 hours on a dyno which simulated 150,000 miles of driving. Sure, at 500 miles an hour maybe.

Perhaps it's a good engine but who knows yet? If it's really good they will probably quit selling it. The old GM 3.8 was a heck of an engine.

I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra CrewMax. It's a beast but it rides like a car. Six speed tranny and pulls great. I see them for sale every now and then. Mine has 127K miles on her and I think I will keep her another 100K

I will beat Sip to it! I misinterpreted the title of this thread. I have not paid for a "pick up" in so many years that I have no idea what they go for!

Who died and appointed you arbiter of what someone needs or how they should be able to spend THEIR money?

Who died and appointed you the final say on what someone else thinks is ridiculous?

:(:(:(:(:(. And here I am with my 06 F250. It's sort of like me...Looks good, but the running gear is getting tired:o @186,000.

What would suit me...a 1954 or 55 F100. Restored, but with a 341 Windsor engine. I wouldn't mind going with stick shift vs automatic. For rear end...I just happen to have a Champ quick change I could put under, for either pulling stumps, or going for 80 MPG on the flat ground.

At least with a older one like that, there is room inside,,,even if it did have bench seats. It might be old school, but at least I could still be able to change the spark plugs in it.:D It's not 6 feet off the ground, so I wouldn't need the side steps for getting in and out.:D. And it would still probably be $20,000 less than what one of these new ones go for....

$40,000 for a new one???? I could have bought my first house twice over for that price:eek:

What kills me now from getting a new one, is the sales tax...Then I have to turn around and pay property tax for the plates, then of course insurance on a new one.....

Yup, for a short moment of insanity I wanted a Ford SVT Raptor:eek:

Person at the LGS just got one, not a basic one but with absolutely everything. Cost more than my house!

Not that I need such a truck but even a basic one is crazy, plus you have to feed it!

Hey I can dream I was 21 again also.:D

So I guess I'm "that guy". Mine is an Oxford white 2010 SVT Raptor I ordered just the way I wanted it. Only missing the sunroof and the $1000 "digital mud" decal option. I had a sunroof in my Lincoln Mark LT pickup but did not need it for my intended use for the Raptor. I'll get back to the Lincoln in a moment. The Tuxedo black one belongs to a buddy of mine who installed the Velociraptor upgrade kit to 575HP.

There are certain jobs, or lines of work, which allow one to basically purchase the most expensive trucks on the lot. If you are making your money with the truck, then it really doesn't matter how much the truck costs. I used to get paid $75/day for my truck and I'd work 21-28 days straight. I'd also get $75/day for my quad and $150/day for my 5th wheel for a grand total of $300/day just for showing up with those items. Paid off a $6000 quad in 3 months at that rate. $750/mo truck payment is nothing if you are stacking cheese in that manner.

I've owned a LOT of trucks/vehicles/motorcycles, etc. My job required hauling around dirty crew members, towing 50kw generators, etc. so at that point the F250 PowerStroke was what did it for me. When my job changed and I wasn't hauling and diesel fuel was over $5/gal., I traded in the F250 for a 2007 Lincoln Mark LT at 0% interest. That was more or less a limo-truck. Super nice. But I felt bad driving it off-road as much as I do. I go to some crazy places and drive at least 50% off-road in the process. The Lincoln Mark LT (which is now the F150 Platinum) is a great street truck, great towing for a F150 and super luxurious but was not tough enough, for me at least.

The Raptor is a different story. The 5.4L engine that was in my Lincoln Mark LT was in the 1st Raptors. They were very "meh". The 6.2L engine came out and I jumped on it. It is by far the best truck I have owned/driven. Drives the Toy Boys nuts. Expensive? Yeah, just like many of the things in life. I certainly wouldn't recommend that anyone purchase anything out of their price range or ability to pay/maintain. However if your job dictates, then a tool such as a Raptor may in fact be just what the doctor ordered.

I know of one business in particular that used to run F250 or F350 Super Duty exclusively. They got 1 Raptor and ended up selling all their other Super Duty, replaced with Raptors.

My Raptor gets 15mpg whereas my new Dodge Ram 5.7 Hemi is getting 13mpg. The Ecoboost is the way to go if you're concern is fuel economy. My concern is performance.

I'm 47, there's not one sticker on my Raptor and my collection met an unfortunate demise at the bottom of the ocean in a tragic boating accident...

I did price out a new model and the supercab was around $52K while the crew cab was around $55K. I think I'll keep my 2010 mostly-paid-for model...

Well I knew some slightly demented old cuss would go down that road. I just didn't figure it would be you doc!!!:D:rolleyes:

We had a Suzuki dealer (Pembroke Suzuki) that got word that Suzuki was pulling out of the US due to lackluster sales, and the owner called me up to let me know that while he wouldn't be selling any new 2013 Suzuki's, that he would continue to remain in business providing factory warranty support for my SX4 Crossover, and would be selling low mileage, damage free used cars...many high end models.. He also asked if I was still interested in the Equator, which is a re-badged Nissan Frontier, and I said I may if the price was right. He said he had a buyer for my SX4, would give me $14500.00 in trade, and the brand new Equator RMZ-4 Crew Cab 4x4 with auto trans, 5.0 foot bed, which has an MSRP of $32,789.00 I could have for for $26789.00; I offered $25789.00 with tax included, I made up the $11k cash difference and got a very capable 4x4 pickup. But you're right, these pickups can get right pricey if one doesn't know how to shop and negotiate.

Nothing is cheap any more, and pickups are even less cheap than that. I remember looking at one about 10 years ago and getting sticker shock. I can't imagine what they must be like now.

I had a 1969 F250 4x4 for years. It finally fell apart under a tarp in the driveway and I donated it. I guess if I really needed a truck I would have kept after that one, but I got it used and half-thrashed, and I had to make choices in those days about where to spend the money. The truck came in second. Now if I decide I will need another one I am looking at huge bucks even for a decent used one. I don't need a crew cab, but I want 4x4, overload springs, and an 8-foot bed. There's a 10-foot Alaskan in my side yard that needs something to carry it around on if I am ever going to use it again. Ford, I guess. Just not easy about Dodge and don't want to start learning the GM way. I might consider a Japanese truck if any company there makes one as big as I want. I don't even know if they do.

Probably just dreaming here. They could cost half as much or twice, and I still probably won't ever have another one either way.

I bought this one from a local dealer in November. It was an off-lease they bought at an auction. Ten months old with 22,000 miles. It's an "average" equipped '12 F150 XLT. Cloth, cruise, nice stereo, power windows, locks, tilt, cruise, 5.0L V-8.

New sticker was $40,100.00. Ten months later dealer was asking $28,500. They threw in a bed liner, steps, chrome mirror and door handle covers and we had a deal.

The Silverado 1500HD I traded had 130,000 trouble-free miles and a 6.0L that got about 15MPG on the highway. This one gets 15.5 around town and 20 on the road. Saved me $150.00 a month in fuel alone.

I still sort of miss my '53 Chevy pickup (new to me in 1967). Simple, honest, and affordable even on a GI's paycheck. That little 216 stove bolt got me down the road pretty well.

Not to mention they're collectable now.
