I acquired a DAO M64-5 sometime back and just noticed that the hammer and trigger are both case hardened. Is that the usual, or are stainless more appropiate? The sn is : CBS 3362, about '97 I think. It came with rubber Hogues. I was hoping to find some sign of NYPD, but nothing. On right side of grip, on the butt is electroetched "21512" space and "764". What is the meaning of these numbers?

I was just in a LGS and saw a 64-5 3" that had a case hardened hammer and trigger as well and was wondering the same thing. We're all 64-5's that way or just some of them?

There was a point when S&W was shipping Stainless Revolvers with case hardened hammers and triggers. It did not last too long and they wound up flash chroming carbon steel components to make them look like stainless steel. The original stainless hammers and triggers were difficult to manufacture and Smith discontinued trying after a short while. While Case Hardened hammers and triggers are not what I'd call rare, the lions share are flash chromed.

If the numbers are from the factory probably part numbers.

My 64's that have DAO hammers from the factory are 2 Brinks models (2 inch and 4 inch) and the other 4 inch came from an overseas contract.

Had one of the 4 inchers cut down to 3.

All of mine have the darker trigger and hammer.
