Defending Against Mob Violence

Me and buddies got caught up in 1968 race riots. We were on our way to Canada to bear hunt. School had just let out. We never gave riots a thought we were from small town and only saw that stuff on the news in big cities. We hit Youngstown after midnight and store fronts broke out, cars burning. We started running lights, hardly anyone on the streets. The National Guard got us right in middle of town. After questioning us and checking our story they escorted us out of town. The officer told us that or rifles were to be used only on Bear. A few hours later on raised hiway in Buffalo you could look down into town and see mayhem that had occurred before cops put a lid on it.

Sometimes, protests and/or mobs just happen with no notice to folks who aren't and/or don't want to be involved. A couple of years ago I had no idea there were protests as I was driving on the freeway but there were people, lots of people walking along the shoulder. I found out later on the local news that they eventually blocked the freeway. The same news showed people getting caught at an intersection as protesters beat on their cars.

When I traveled abroad in 1997, I got a print out from the CDC on what vaccinations I needed (southern Asia). Included was advice "avoid all political gatherings / protests."

I'd do the same in the US, especially now. In fact, if I was driving north to ski (not this year) I'd avoid all large cities and simply go around those.

I looked at the Waze app. It uses your tracking device (aka smartphone) to report your location to total strangers. If you're ok with that, then it's probably useful. I try to minimize the number of total strangers my tracking device reports my location to.

Both the Maps app that comes with iPhone and Google Maps are better map apps, and both come with road obstruction notification. I don't like Waze for a variety of reason, including the one cited below. You also can't get a satellite view with Waze, which to me is much more helpful in a map app . . .

Then get rid of the cell phone and any other electronics (probably even the toaster)..........

But, I don't call them "homeless", I call them BUMS, which is what they ARE!

Here in California we are moe concerned on what to call the homeless than getting them off the street.. It used to be homeless....then it became "people affected by homelessness" and now it's "people experiencing homelessness" I guess "rent or mortgage challenged" had too much of a mental stigma. Next week the city council is voting on what to call "man" hole covers.

Lived in Seal Beach during the late 80's. No homeless were in town if the local PD could help it.Long Beach and Huntington Beach got them all.

Ha! Got ya'll beat.....

I ditched the smartphone in 2014 and went back to a flip phone. I never used any apps and never needed anything more than a map and road signs.

I typically don't own things I am opposed to, so never getting a smartphone if I can help it.

Smartphones and social media have done sooooo much damage to society. Both are catalysts to the insanity our culture is seeing right now.

Massads Opinions

Well taken. Since warning shots are no longer viable I think maybe racking the slide of a shotgun and pointing at the determined leader of a mob is the Least that could be done when surrounded
Better to back off sooner to avoid confrontation. I'be see the videos of citizens in cars with family surrounded by mobs
Not only mob scenes. In places like Florida. Everyone has a gun. There's many desperate people drugged up that have no respect for their own life. Confrontation can come suddenly and from anywhere.
That and 45 acp loaded to limit penetration and exaggerate impact.

The folks that live here year round normally drive sanely. It is when the folks that are winter residents that drive with no respect to others. This year has been a bit different a lot of the usual winter residents have stayed all year, and the accident rate has been up.

A friend of mine normally flies down to go to a large gun show here every winter and stays two weeks. He does not drive while he is here, lets us chauffer him around. He watches what goes on while driving. His response is "that we are growing another batch to send to you".

I have to differ. Come to Vero Beach. Sit on US-1 for 5 minutes. You'll not see Caddy's and Buick's with Q-Tip head seniors driving like they are on a drag strip blasting down the road. You'll see jacked up pick ups, Mustangs and Chargers. I live on US-1 and been here long enough to know

I grew up in Vero Beach. My Great-Grandparents lived here. Have seen it all. The people that drive like that usually come from the cities up north, those are usually kids that their parents buy fancy toys for the to play with. Yes, I do see Q-Tips driving every make of car known, they have a problem of pulling out into traffic that is doing 45 and they do maybe 30 if you are lucky. We use to use turn signals when we turned. Nowadays folks do not use them or if they do they get about one blink of the light before they turn. They cut across several lanes of traffic, because they have no idea where they are going. Could go on and on.......

So I guess this is a no no
