I see where this storm may be in the Gulf by Tuesday with winds at 80 MPH+. It may not come this way or we may not get the full brunt of the storm but I will start this afternoon getting ready for it. I've got plenty of food and water for consumption. First up is to stock up on non-ethanol gas. Charge the battery on the generator and run it some. Start to pick up a few yard missles. Get the 14' boat off the roof of the chicken house and put it out in the field where it can fill up with rainwater where it won't blow off. The closer the storm gets, the more stuff I'll do to get ready for it, if it even comes this way. Get a couple of thousand out of the bank because plastic doesn't work when the power is off. And most important...stock up on beer and bourbon. I've got a decent supply now because I was a victim of "The Great Bourbon Shortage Of Hurricane Katrina" and swore I'd never get caught like that again. (thank you Max and the little brown truck) I'll go down to the store and pick up a little more tomorrow.

Thanks a lot Charlie:rolleyes:

Now I have to get off my lazy butt and do stuff:D

Nah, I flipped a coin;)

"Living Somewhere in the Cone of Uncertainty"

Now Charlie, you know it is way to soon to do any prep for a storm. We must wait until the day before it hits and then rush to buy plywood and go to WalyWorld for water, beer and ammo. :D:D

OP,
Our early prep was done over a month ago, just need to pick up the yard missiles, and a bit of scotch, Living NE of Cape Hatteras NC you learn to prepare and pay attention, I figure if the big one comes ashore here Ill have Beach front property with a concrete pad on it by the time the water recedes and that's about it. (oh and I am about 5+ miles inland)

I'll have to see what my son is doing for prep. This is their first hurricane season in the south and I'm sure he'll be a bit nervous. I told him to pre buy and pre cut the plywood for the windows, but I don't know if he did.

I have replaced all my doors and windows with impact resistant versions.
I used to put up the aluminum shutters every time a hurricane was threatening, which took about 3-4 hours. Now my life is much simpler, and instead of the feeling of living in a cave with those shutters covering all openings, I can now look outside and see what is going on.
Let's hope we all stay safe.

Charlie, if you can't find ethanol-free gas, get some of this stuff:
Amazon.com: stabil marine
Wally World has the big bottle for $20. I've been using it in the generator on the truck for several months now since I can't always get real gas. I used to have to empty the bowl under the carb every fifth or sixth tank, but I haven't touched it since I started with this stuff.

Batten down the hatches and stay safe!

Charlie,

What about your hood? Are you in charge of your neighbors too?. My generator is good to go. Need just a few batteries in case it moves further west. Good luck.

Regards

Bill

When they start naming storms after the bartender on the Love Boat, it's a sure sign that something is amiss in the universe.

And you know this piece of trivia how?? Why??:D:eek:

Just regular sta-bil is good for 2 years in any gas. I don't use anything but hi test-even in the lawn mower. With the way the fuel is, it just does not make sense to me. I usually keep a couple of 5 gal plastic gas cans out in the shed with sta-bil in it. I use a little of it for the mower, and change it once a year before 'cane season by putting it in the car's. I put sta-bil in everything now, whether it is run regularly or not-really makes a difference. We also have a 12 foot above ground pool that is ocasionaly used to cool off in, but is a ready fresh water reservoir when power goes out. I have a stainless steel shallow well pump from good old Harbor freight that I put on wheels, and a generator that's about 3500 wts for the bare essentials. My home has the old style spigots that can be back charged, so I use a washing machine hose with 2 female ends, hook it to the pump, which is hooked to the generator, and we can shower, flush, wash, etc. We put our trust in Him, and pray for others as well. Flapjack.

Can you buy gas w/out alcohol in Hattiesburg? None of the stations in Louisville area carry anything but 10% ethanol and they make noise about going to 15%. We used to have one local oil company that carried real gas but they quit last year. I use Stabil alcohol treatment in all my power equip gas but sure wish real gas was available.

Good luck with the hurricane but it's obvious this ain't your first rodeo.

If the trailer blows over here I'm gonna burn what's left of it. It lost some of the roof during Katrina and has had a large tree fall on it since during one of the thunderstorms. They keep fixing it it. It just won't die. As far as non-ethanol gas is concerned, Citgo usually has it in several stations in this area. I guess Hugo Chavez is good for something.

I have lots of tuna, peanut butter, pasta, jar sauce, bread, water. 4 cans of propane for the stove, lanterns and flashlights (all LED and enough AA and AAA batteries for a months). I'll fill up my truck and a 3 gal mower can on saturday and that's it. In 2004 I was "offline" for 2 weeks. At the time I was a pharma rep and couldn't transmit data, which was necessary on a daily basis to maintain a position on the payroll. That was the biggest impact on me, although folks a block away lost everything. I ain't getting too worked up, yet. Joe
