Favorite whiskey?

Southern Comfort contained whiskey once, I have no idea when that ended. Never the less around 1968 while living in a tent in of all places, Tent City on the periphery of Da Nang AFB I learned that Southern Comfort was good rocket repellent. Every other night I had to go to work out of a RC130 as a snoop. But on those off nights I would work on Southern Comfort. And, it worked as advertised.

Too bad it wasn't an AC-130.;)

The only scotchs I can stand are the really expensive single-malts. I also like a nice Seven Crowns and water with a Sam Adams back. I drank too much Jack back in the day to be able to appreciate it now but I would like to taste Maker's Mark.

I only drink whisky because I haven't found a whiskey that I liked.

Sadly, my bottle of Springbank 21 is nearly gone.

For anyone who likes single malt whiskys but not their prices, I would recommend trying some McClelland's. These are single malts that come from famous distilleries, but cost much less because they are not sold under their more famous names. There are 4 varieties: Islay, Lowland, Highland, and Speyside. I like the Islay one the best - it's actually Bowmore. I can usually buy McClelland's 70cl bottles for less than $20 on sale where I live - quite a bargain compared to the famous labels.

By the way, Bowmore is one of the few Scottish distilleries that has its own floor maltings (where the barley is spread on the floor to sprout). Highland Park and Springbank still use this old method, too.

I just opened a new bottle of the Highland this evening...sitting here enjoying a bit with a Joya de Nicaragua cabinetta serie cigar. I'm fairly new to single malt but I find I like the McClellands as much as several that were over twice the price. I prefer the Highland to the Islay...still need to try the Speyside and Lowland.

My favourite is not spelled with an "e". For power drinking you just can't beat Dewars and soda in a tall Tevo tumbler-for economy of motion I use a 24oz size as my one drink of the day ;) When I'm with "people", I'll drink single malt in a small glass

1. George Dickel "white label", 12 year old whisky, Tullahoma, TN. Three miles from the house!
2. Bulleit bourbon from Lawerenceburg, KY.
3. Blanton's bourbon, Frankfort,KY

Bourbon is not Tennessee whiskey. Scotch is not Irish whiskey. Single malts and blends of whiskeys and/or scotch (Crown Royal and Johnny Walker) are different as well.

This having been said:
Bourbon: W.L. Weller Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (excellent prices and levels, only made with rye - nearly whiskey without a hangover)
Tennessee whiskey: Jack Daniel's Single Barrel
Scotch: Oban (single malt)
Blended Scotch: Johnny Walker Black (have had Blue but its $200 a bottle)
Irish whiskey: Bushmill's Black if your Protestant, or my favorite if you are Catholic like me: MICHEAL COLLIN'S SINGLE MALT

I am drinking Famous Grouse right now...

But Laphroaig 10 year old is still my favorite.

However Black Bottle is pretty good. especially when you consider the price.

Old Weller 107 proof
When I lived in KY I knew an old moonshiner that made Corn, Wheat and Rye whiskeys, he would make white oak shavings and toast them in the oven till they got the right color, then filter his whiskey through the white oak and cheesecloth giving the liquor a red tint, his red wheat whiskey was as good as any I have ever tried.

I'm not much of a drinker these days. When I have something, its usually a beer. Back in the day, I found that whiskey "made me" a little roudy, and aggressive. Ended up having to straighten up some folks that were in need of an attitude adjustment. That is just not very cool after a certain age... I'm a very infrequent drinker of hard liquor these days, just not into it.

Fast forward to last November, my neighbor served some Woodford Reserve, and it was very smooth, great taste. I got a bottle for when company is over. I've also liked JW blue label, good stuff.

The last time I remember drinking whiskey, I chugged one of those square bottles of Jack Daniels. I was already drunk at the time. Thankfully, it didn't stay down long. :)

That is only one of many reasons that I quit drinking......

Not much of a Scotch fan.
Do enjoy a Canadian from a small distillery called 'Forty Creek'. Very smooth.
Other than that, do enjoy Makers Mark, Wild Turkey Select and Russell's Reserve.

Trying some new (to me) drinks. Crown Royal is high up there but so is Bushmills Black Bush. Very smooth. Had my first sip of it last night and I will definately have some more of this wonderful Irish Whiskey.

I'll quote my late Grandpa's favorite answer to everything.
" Son, it's Whatever your buyin' "

Lagavulin is my favorite scotch I can afford on a regular basis. So smokey and peaty. The first time you try it you'll be overwhelmed by the peat you won't like it; by the time you finish the bottle every other scotch is bland in comparison. It goes on sale at Costco ($10 off per bottle) around the holidays, I try to buy a years worth at that time.

This happened one evening coming home from Costco, bottom of the box ripped and the bottle fell out and broke. My wife said she had never seen me so sad, I almost cried. You could smell the scotch throughout the neighborhood for a couple of hours.
