It's on the way here! Used the buy it now. Probably up to a couple of weeks for pics so be patient please. Decided to stick with what I know and am comfortable with- wheel guns, particularly j-frames for now. No lock, full length ejection, .357 option, pinned front sight for night sight option, SA/DA, no snag hammer, lots of grip options, familiarity, and stainless were all good reasons for finding a 649-3. Can't wait!

Thanks! I just last week shot my first .357 out of an LCR and it had some serious recoil. I doubt the 649 will be much better. That option went down on the list of reasons for buying a Magnum J after that. Supposed to be shipped tomorrow. I don't do social media very well. I mostly lurk, learn things. Pics are king here, I agree. Wife's out of town so it's just me and the dog:rolleyes:.

Awesome! You don't see -3s come up for sale to often. They are my favorite "thinking mans J-frame." I'm sure you will enjoy it. Its a shame the the -3 wasn't in production that long. It's one I'd like to see S&W "bring back" but, I doubt it will happen.

The snub 16/66 always was a handful in its RB configuration: the gun would dive in the hand with Mag rounds. T-grip would help somewhat. The Pach RB Compac was a partial solution, but it's excess weight and bulk (IMO) added to the gun made one ask, "Why not simply carry a 4" with better MV and sight radius?"

I've found the .357 Model 60, close cousin to your Mag 649, can be controlled with reasonable Mag loads such as the 110 JHP. Other posters report success with modern short-bbl Mag rounds. With a replacement grip, the gun does not dive in the hand like the snub 19/66.

Thanks. I'm sure not aware of a rating system...or how to do it. I will be getting the bill of sale from my FFL tomorrow after a viewing to make sure it is acceptable. Then down to the county seat to add it to my permit, then I can actually possess it. The grips will need replacement as they are Pachmeyer Presentation grips, maybe good for shooting, not so much for concealment. This is the first I've heard of difficulty in pulling the hammer back. I will bring snap caps, flashlight and feeler gauges to my FFL to give it a thorough check over via Jim Marsh's check list. It will need some polishing also I believe, judging from the pictures. I don't mind the TLC as long as it's mechanically sound. Also a Big Dot or the likes will be in it's future. Before and after pics? Or just after?

Help please!

The 649-3 came in and I spent nearly an hour checking it over. Cylinder gap is .007", a little higher than I hoped but I believe within specs. The bore looked good to me. Lock up was tight. Timing looked good to me also. Took the grips off and corrosion was present. More later....

...it's a little later. A little disappointed in the overall condition. Certainly not as good as some of the gems I see here. The barrel is over clocked a bit too. Gotta decide wether to keep it or send it back on the 3 day return policy. Absolutely love the SA trigger, DA trigger pull is heavier than my 640 38spl. I can probably polish out most of the corrosion although it's definitely beyond the surface. Took the side plate off and it needs a little attention in there, not much concern there. Shoulda taken some pics, I never remember there's a camera on my phone. As I thought, the grips will get replaced if I keep it. Any advice is welcome.

Sorry to hear it's not in best of shape. :( Other than the barrel it sounds like not a big deal for a carry gun unless it was advertised as much better condition. Are/did you keep it?

If it shoots straight it's worth keeping, me thinks.

That's the problem with online sales...without detailed pics of your particular example it's a gamble.

Well I kept it. All of the corrosion is under the grips, other than that it shows fairly well. My reasoning for keeping it is that the -3s are hard to come by and now I have one and I can still look for one in pristine condition. I need to shoot it to see if the slightly over clocked barrel will effect it's POI. I won't shoot it until I have time to thoroughly clean it and lube it. I need to take some pics and see what you all think. Can the over clocked barrel be fixed by a competent gunsmith if it needs it? Does that mean a new barrel installed by S&W or what exactly? I put my 60 Pro Series grips on it temporarily and I REALLY like this 649-3. If it all works out it will take the place of my 640 38spl as an EDC.
