I have a set of jigged bone stocks without a screw and of course a factory screw will not fit.

Besides going to Home Depot and trying every screw in sight with the hopes of find the right one, what are my options? Do we have a forum member here who specializes in screws?

My solution is always to replace the screw and escutcheons with S&W parts.

Check S&W or
Numrich Gun Parts: Gun Parts & Firearm Accessorieshttps://www.gunpartscorp.com

My concern with that is the bone is brittle and attempting to remove the screw would crack the panel

Being hand made their is good chance they are standard size & thread ruling out metric they are probably going to fall between #4 & #8 and only couple threads. Would be a good idea to invest a couple bucks in a screw gauge to see what you have.

When you use the term "doesn't fit" to describe the screw, do you mean the factory screw is not long enough, the head is too large to fit inside the escutcheon, or are the threads the wrong size?

Factory threads are 5x44, I believe.

Most likely size is 6x32, Go to Ace Hardware and check their "Gun screw" section. You will probably need to trim-to-length.

Remove what screw? You said it was missing! Or did you mean the escutcheon?

The threads are the wrong size, the head fits in the escutcheon.

I'm confused, you said you have a factory screw. If the screw came from the gun how can it be the incorrect thread profile?

The threads screw into the little metal socket (can't spell escrution ) that are provided by the grip maker . Custom grip makers sometimes use non-S&W escrutions and screws .
If you are lucky you can find a screw at a well stocked hardware store ... some even have "gun" screws ... My Ace Hardware didn't have any of the correct thread and size for a set of Ahrend Grips ... Kim was still in business and sent me two screws free ...
I don't have a sure fire answer for those grips ... bring them along and ...Try Before You Buy !

Take the panel with the nut half to a Ace hardware store. Many of them have a set of drawers with gun screws. Check the screws to find the correct thread. The gun screw selection has a variety of lengths and heads, but you may have to trim the tread end some.
