Gun Storage in Another State

So I am taking a five day cruise. No guns on the boat, obviously. I will drive 11 hours to a coastal city and embark. My car will be parked for five days. I hate the idea of leaving a gun in a car but I don't like driving around without a gun.

All states between me and the coast are "free states."

Any great ideas?

Lock it in the center console or glove compartment and call it a day. Cruise terminals have relatively secure parking. You're gonna pay about $25 a day for it, and they'll have a sign that says they're not responsible, but they'll also have some monitoring and security . . .

I think that Muss has the right idea. The only difference I would suggest is a car safe/box secured in the spare tire area of your trunk.

A friend of mine went to a branch office of the same bank he did his banking with and got a safe deposit box for a 2 week time period while he was on his honeymoon cruise.

Seemed like a good idea....have no idea as to the cost to do so however.

I'd buy a low-cost but solid handgun that will not be a life long regret if stolen. Think SD9VE, Model 469, Taurus Model 85, Ruger P-series. Lots of guns on the market that are more than dependable enough for a cross country drive but don't cost much.

Leave it at home? Barring physical disability, if your personal security game isn't on point without a gun, adding one ain't gonna help. Besides, unless you've decided to depart from some hellhole like Mogadishu or Newark, you're still absurdly low-risk.

I would be tempted to pull the cylinder, if its a revo, or pull the slide if its an auto - and take it on the ship (unless your stuff is scanned ala TSA). If someone does break into your car, then they'll be stymied until they figure out how to buy or steal a replacement part. That said, I prolly wouldn't take one with me ... seems like there might be more downsides than upside.

Forgot to mention - neither cylinder or slide is a "firearm" in the US - not sure about where you're going.

Gun on a cruise

Anything that you take on a boat is scanned. Your going to have to answer a lot of questions, and most probably you are going to loose the slide or cylinder. I have investigated a lot of car and truck burglaries over the years and in most cases the actor will just go in a side door. Very seldom will they go in a trunk or the covered bed of a pick up.

Personally, I would just leave the gun at home.

But of the options mentioned so far, the safe deposit box is the only one I'd consider.

One of those handgun car safes secured by a cable or something of the sort. Secure it in your vehicle in your favorite not readily observable location. Place your inexpensive car gun in the car safe. PT111G2 for about $200 bucks comes to mind. That's what I got one for. But they do shoot pretty good.

Find a gun shop near terminal that offers a cleaning service. Maybe $25-30 bucks? They hold onto gun until you get back.

Don't over think it, just do this. Travel to the terminal and back safe and secure, it is not like it is painted on the side of your car that there is a gun inside , is it? There are hundreds of cars at these terminals, why pick yours to break into? And if they do, just pack a common 442 rather than the 3" M66.

Some will take issue but as I recall when I took a short cruise I left my gun under the seat and I think it was my cheap Taurus. I have one stashed in St. Louis too, so I don't have to do the airplane thing.

I just got back from a cruise the other day out of Port Canaveral. I decided to just leave my gun home, and miraculously I made it back home safe and sound.

I really doubt that thief will spend much time in each auto... You might find a really good hiding place under a back seat or behind the dash? You could find a lock box that could be welded in the spare tire well... and then the tire bolted back down. There are sometimes concealed nitches behind the carpet in the trunk area.

My basic reaction is that I don't like to travel anywhere without a handgun and if I was traveling through five free states and parking in a free state then I'd just leave it in the car. And I would do exactly what someone else said - I'd bring an inexpensive gun that I could "get over" if it was stolen. We almost all have at least one like that.

I'd carry it on me through the trip and then hide it in the car as I was getting my luggage. Although I do admit I don't NEED a gun pointed to my head before I took a cruise I am in no hurry to go on one, either.

Where to leave it? Under the front seat? Fine. Locked in a console or glove compartment? Fine. Locked in the trunk? Fine. Double secure in a locked box cabled to the car somehow? Fine.

But, if there is time, I think this reply is imaginative and BRILLIANT!!!
