Have a S&W M28. Here it goes Gents. Need a .45. Have a 625 5inch 1989 barrel. Now do I send it out to have it done up in .45ACP or .45LC. I've let the .45 Special rest for now. Brass is what I'm concerned about. And the lack of a good Smith here in Billings. What do you think? Thanks Men...

I've been down the custom road several times.
Two of the bad trips were with nationally known gunsmiths; one of which required a trip to the factory to undo the mess. I would seriously recommend keeping the model 28 as it is. I would either buy a 25 or 625 if I wanted a 45 caliber. You will come out cheaper and have something that a gunsmith will touch if it requires maintenance. It will also have resale value. People are shy about custom work unless the maker is Bowen or someone like him.

For the money you are going to spend, you can keep the 28 and buy a 25 and have two guns instead of one that you will never get your money out of.

Im dropping it off to my ole bud John Linebaugh in a week or so.. Who better to do it. I live in Laurel MT. due north of Cody WY... Thanks...

If you don't have much in it, then make it into what you want. I have two guns with Hamilton Bowen right now being worked over. One will be a 5-screw K frame Target with 8 3/8" barrel chambered for the new .327 Federal Magnum.

As to deciding between ACP and LC, there are a lot more Smiths in ACP, so I would go with LC to be different. LC will be a lot less work, since the headspace is the same as the 28 is already. ACP will take a lot more machining.

I've got a 1917 frame I fitted with a spare .45 LC cylinder to make a convertible. It works great, but you have slop when the cylinder is open due to the location of the frame lug. If you fitted the 28 for ACP, you would have the same slop unless you replace the frame lug.
