Hodgdon HP-38 powder

I’ve never used HP38 / w-231 but it has been on my radar. I have enough Bullseye to last me a while but this thread has convinced me to pick up a couple of pounds next time I’m at my local gun shop. Thank you for all the good info.

I'll try to post some results ASAP

I tested some loads today for my RIA custom built USPSA gun it started life as a 10mm and I didn't care for it so I ended up converting it to .40 S&W and use it for USPSA competition it's a great gun now. The load I tested which worked extremely accurate is a 155 Berrys jfp over 6.0/231 @ 1.135 coal 231 seems to have a certain feel to it while shooting it's very comfortable I'd say even though this is a full load.

I use it for light HBWC loads in .38 and .357 cases, it's accurate but it ain't clean burning. Might be in heavier loadings but not in my light target loads.

I am curious why the Speer #14 gives different beginning and different max charges along with differing velocities for the HP38 and 231?

For instance, page 874 using a 148 gr HBWC, HP-38 MAX Charge is 3.2 gr and gives 801 fps. Using 231 it shows 3.3 as MAX Charge and gives 804 fps. There are other bullets listed with differing data. This book is from 2009.

Maybe it could just be the variation from one batch to the next??

I’ve asked the same question here several times before as Speer isn’t the only one who treats them as separate powders. The answer has always been different batches but no one can tell me why they don’t list separate loads for different batches of Unique or 2400. Just another unknown I guess.

Since I posted, my question just deepened.
Even the latest Lyman Edition 51 has too much variable between the powders in several loadings for them to be the "same thing".

One load has a 3 grain difference between the 2 powders listed as the MAXIMUM LOAD.

I don't plan to lose sleep (or fingers) over this.....
