How many guns do you own?

The sensitivity to this question on a Forum that includes several thousand members of the Smith & Wesson Collector's Association - emphasis on COLLECTORS - is ridiculous. Actually, almost childish.

Y'all talk about this gun and that gun that you own or just bought or broke or won a medal with - whatever - and then you discuss a whole other gun in your next post. Collectors and accumulators abound on this Forum and I'd wager not a manjack amongst y'all has less than five guns and most of y'all have a dozen or more and some many dozens and even hundreds.

Saying "nunya" or the "boat sank" is ridiculous and NO - IT IS NOT RUDE to ask that question on a Forum like this. To alleviate the sensitivity I posted an anonymous poll recently and even there the "nunya"-type comments arose.

Back when I shot cowboy action we would have such discussions at meals after matches and my answer, back then, of around 100 would be met with derision by guys with 200 and 300 guns. We're gun people, PEOPLE, pretending that you do not own many dozens of guns is ridiculous in the extreme.

A few minutes ago someone started a thread asking whether you owned a Star pistol. He said something to the effect "among your S&Ws and Rugers do you happen to own a Star pistol?". There is an assumption being made right there - he EXPECTED people who owned a number of guns to reply that they might also have a Star pistol. Nobody wrote "I only own Star brand pistols" because they wouldn't be on this Forum if that were true. My reply was that I only have one of those. But I still have dozens of other guns, handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

Heck, on July 4th, hanging around poolside with some old friends and new ones this exact subject same up. Saying that I think I used to have 100 but now I'm down to around 70 was an easy reply. The old friends know me well enough to know that answer and the new friends liked it and had their own numbers. No rudeness, no embarrassment, it jus' beez dat weigh!

Any ideas why this would be such an intriguing subject to so many? It's certainly a regular and frequent thread with the answers always being the same, like virtually all regular, frequent threads.

A nail gun, a grease gun, air blow gun, heat gun, staple gun, oh and lastly a Cold Steel blow gun...so I guess 6.....

Dang, forgot about my blow gun. That is 1 more. Bought it at the Ag Exposition I went to, back in High School with the FFA. ;)

I just submitted the copyright paperwork for "lost in a boating accident".

I want to nail this down before another 100 million people use it.

I'll let you know where to send the royalty checks.

Don't forget the variants, Kayak, Canoe, etc.

For many of us, it isn't about not telling others what we have. It is about the possibility of the gun grabbers/AFT, soon to be Exes lawyer, etc that might be snooping these forums and may use these forums as a way to gather intel on gun owners. Putting information on a public forum that could be used against you is never a good idea.

As contentious as owning guns is to lots of people, the less people that know what you have, the better.

Follow up - the one question that I consider rude is from folks who are NOT gun people, when they ask "Are you carrying a gun today?". THAT is rude.

My friends know that answer, anyway............

Why would anyone who isn't "gun people" (or who is for that matter) ask you that?

i had a conversation with a old friend from the early 70's recently. He is extremely liberal and tree hugger. I told him I have been collecting firearms since I retired and how many (not a lot) He said whaaat? Are you planning on killing a bunch of people? He was somewhat serious as he could not see the point of owning guns. I said they are old and revolvers and I don't even shoot them. He didn't get it.

I am 60 years old and have traded , swapped , bartered alot of guns in my lifetime , I currently own 55 of different manufacturers . Mainly S&W just wondering what the adverage person has ?

I would be very cautious about advertising how many guns you own. We do not know who is accessing the information on this forum or the internet in general. Finding out who you are and where you live is easy on the internet.
