I've been down in the basement all afternoon cleaning and organizing my gun room and wondered how many members also have a dedicated 'space' for the hobby.
I feel really lucky to have a 12' x 12' room I built in '91 down here. It is my sanctuary from work, troubles and the Wife, not neccesarrily in that order, it shifts around at times.
I've got 2 benches, one dedicated to reloading equipment with 2 RCBS Rockchuckers and am about to mount a Lyman turret press, it has ample space at 8' feet long for a bunch of equipment and storage. I built in shelves and a spot for the scale when I assembled it. The other bench is for firearms maintanence and general work, also doubles as a work space for general day to day stuff. I've got a sturdy Liberty safe and a smaller one, some bookshelves for reference material and an old 'Barristers' glass front shelf unit for display items.
The walls are covered with memorabilia ranging from printer trays with bullets/cartridges to Indian artifacts, old pictures, deer antlers, an antique Strohs Beer mirror and even a 'Fallout Shelter in Basement' sign that I liberated from an old building years ago.
I really like spending time down here away from the rest of the world. It is my home within a home and I can't even begin to count the guns I've worked on or the thousands of rounds I've loaded here.
We are contemplating moving within a year to take care of my Parents, and I will sure miss leaving this spot. I don't want to think about the work required to get a new space for my hobby and hope I last another 20 years to build the memories I've gotten from this one.
How many of you have such a spot? Do you all enjoy it as much as I do? I know my Wife would never let me do all I can do here upstairs, this is my territory, the only spot in the house where she is not allowed to gripe or fuss, that is the one rule I set long ago and She has pretty much accepted it.
