First, Welcome to the forum.
We all get our manuf. dates from the Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson 3rd edition.
Post your serial number here with the last couple digits X'ed out and we can give you the date.

Does that work for every gun? i have a M39-2 can i post the number so i'll know the year mine was made?

Well, most of the time. Every once in a while they seem to have left a barrel around hidden for a few years, and then popped it out onto the market just to keep us on our toes.

My book shows the 39-2 as a 9 mil. simi auto with your seril # made betwen 1978 and 1979

Could you find manufacturing dates of a Mod 63?
The Serial starts with AYF78xx the gun is owned by one of my fellow gunclub members and was confiscated (hope i spelled that right) by the police because of a problem with the serial
He got it back after they checked it out and was okay now he asked me because you were able to find the manufacturing date of my mod 39-2

Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, authors Supica and Nahas. You can get it from Amazon. Every serious S&W owner or collector should have this book.
I'd try Google to see if a manual reference pops up somewhere. Some owner booklets can be found on the Internet, and some can not. Sometimes sellers on Ebay have copies they will sell. Or maybe someone here with the same gun would copy his manual and mail it to you.
