The NSA monitors the popular zeitgeist here in the United States via the surveillance society the same way that the Gestapo did in Germany and the NKVD did for Stalin. Things were headed full tilt towards *at least* a new and broader permanent AWB at the end of 2012. But the intelligence agencies predicted bad things were going to happen. People were burying guns and laying in ammo and everything that would shoot. Most importantly the loyalty of the military could not be counted on. So there was a step back. But it will be tried again. You can be sure of it.

I was living in Australia during the buy back. They used our money to pay us what they said our gun was worth. Then the home invasions and Vietnamese gang and biker gang shootouts got going. The weapon common among the Vietnamese was HiPower, always illegal ( practically) and super expensive. Bikers had automatic stuff, grease guns...

OP : Very good article. Raises lots of great points. But I believe that the Left is smart enough to realize these difficulties if a real attempt to repeat the 2A is made. No, they will work at the edges, use soical media to make owning a firearm unacceptable, enact small but ever increasingly onerous requirements to discourage gun owners and gun ownership.
As an example: I spent much of yesterday at a locale hospital waiting as my wife underwent a procedure. Worried and bored, I used my smart phone and the hospitals free wifi to get to this very forum. Thier wi-FI locked me out. It locked out all the other gun forum I read. It's thier wi-FI, it's free and you have to agree to thier conditions to use it - that's ok - it is thier free service to you - but these small incremental steps send a signal that our "gun community" is not welcome.

The author of the article at least had the good sense to mention that the disarming of America would be possible only by the use of force against the American people, and the result would be significant violence.

What was not mentioned is that the proposed actions would necessitate wholesale violations of citizens' rights (due process, search & seizure, etc) to accomplish. Civil war would be pretty well assured.

Sure, the government can impose its will on any individual citizen. Cordoning off neighborhoods and door-to-door searches can also be done without significant risk. However, in the aftermath there would have to be occupation forces to contain the backlash, and there just aren't that many troops and cops (and likely even fewer willing to impose such measures on fellow citizens).

The American Civil War resulted in more casualties than all of our other wars combined. The author's 5-step plan is a recipe for repeating that experience.

Guns can NEVER be confiscated nationwide without the repeal (or ignoring of) the 1st, 4th and 5th Amendments, never mind the 2nd. Which is why if you dig deep enough, you'll find that the advocates of gun bans and confiscations ALSO support destruction of the 1st, 4th and 5th as means to those ends.
