I once gave concealed weapon license training to an immigrant
from Russia. He corrected the way I pronounced Makarov.
I pronouced it Mack a rov (with emphasis on Mack).
He pronounced it Muh care ov (with emphasis on care),
I'm sure this is something that you always wanted to know.

Russian names with 3 syllables are pronounced with the stress on the middle syllable. So it's Mak-KAH-ov. Romanov is Ro MAN ov. Although neither sounds right to American ears.

I'm glad I have American, especially Southern, ears. :-)

Have a blessed day,

Leon

There was a Russian hockey player from the 80s and 90s- Sergei Makarov. One of the all time greats.
I would guess his name was pronounced both ways, with an exact 50/50 split. Poor fella.

How do they pronounce "Garand"?
... or Leupold?

I've been pronouncing them "mak-a-rof", "ger-and" and "lee-o-pold" for decades. I know it's not the way the inventor/founder pronounced it, but I'm not about to change now.

I do pronounce Kahles correctly (call-us), but only because I had no idea how to say it before their advertising campaign. :o
