Hypothetical: You are going into a gunfight - what handgun do you take - No reloads!

...same one I carry every day and carried on duty at one time... Colt Commander in .38 Super. Bob

Not my choice but I like the way you think! My choice of what I have in the "collection" currently would be my Glock 22RTF. I am considering the purchase of a M&P in .40 and/or a 3.8 XDm in .40 that might also get the nod but I think you see a pattern developing. Just because this is the S&W forum I should mention that although I may not grab it if other more high-speed low-drag pistols were at hand, I would NOT feel at all under-gunned if I had to fight with my Sigma 40GVE. Now if I shot it better I would grab my Glock 20, you have got to love 15-16 rounds of hot 10mm on tap!

All right, hypothetically...

Anything that carries five powerful rounds is more than enough. If you haven't immobilized the threat within three shots, he (if surviving) or his associates will have had time enough to immobilize you. So my choice would be my 296 or 696, or maybe my 649. Anything else on my belt or in my pocket is just extra weight.

Remember 3-3-3: three yards, three shots, three seconds. That's your average gunfight. Or so a wise man told me.

Never been in one. Hope never to be. But this is how I think of it.

A Model 629 with Federal 44B 180 gr. JHP would be my first choice. Second would be a Model 686 with Federal 357B 125 gr. JHP.

If limited to one gun only and it had to be a handgun, I would take the one I shoot most accurately. After numerous range sessions with various handguns, that turns out to be the subcompact Glock 26. For some reason, I can shoot that little 9mm far better than anything else I've ever owned. It also has been 100% reliable.

Load it with 124 gr +P Gold Dots or HSTs.

My S&W SIGMA 40 cal. I've put a lot of ammo thru it and never had a malfunction. 10 round magazine with a relatively big bullet and is as accurate at the shooter.

The M9 .9mm is a good gun too, 'cept for the small 9mm rounds. Again, reliable and as good as the shooter.

if you knew you were going to need to use it.... the largest thing I had access to, maybe even a mini-gun or "Puff"
Oe a practical note - a clearly a 1911 in .45 ACP.

While somewhat of an answer, and also a thread hi-jack, I'm looking at the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 "rifle" that takes Beretta 92 mags, as I already have a Beretta. They also make one that takes Glock 17 mags. I'd pick either, depending on the handgun I'm carrying (I'd have to get a Glock), and an extended capacity mag in the rifle backed up by standard mags for the handgun.
Does anyone have any experience with the Kel-Tec Sub 2000?

Going to a Gunfight?

And I know there will be shooting, I'm taking a rifle or a shotgun.
Glock17 and a 33 round magazine if you insist.

Model 627, 8 shot, .357 125gr hp. since we're being hypothetical.

Otherwise, the usual stock answers: If I knew there was a gunfight, I wouldn't go; I'd show them how fast an old guy can run; a 12 ga; a 16" naval rifle (one of my two preferences if I know there will be trouble); M52 Vulcan.

A T/C Contender, or a Stevens tip-up in .44 Winchester.

I only need one shot, and I'll make it count. :)

I remember an episode from In the Heat of the Night where I think Bubba uses one to get the bad guy. :D
