I need The Right Shoes...

I'm leaning toward the New Balance walking shoe MW811BK -

Now, what about the Dr. Scholls inserts - Since I don't have a shoe store with foot specialists nearby, I used a machine which is supposed to tell you what you need - the price is outrageous though, nearly $100 for a pair of inserts . Any one here tried this machine and the recommended inserts?

I have a lot of trouble with my feet and have found nothing as good as the Rockport walkers for comfort and being able to give me a "feel" for what my feet are doing. Available at reasonable cost online from such vendors as zappos.com, shoebuy.com, etc.

Check out zappos.com
I've found them to be one of the best company's I've ever purchased from and their prices are very good.
+1 on the Rockports, I like the Northfield, very comfortable and waterproof.

New Balance Walking shoes 900 something......The higher numbers the better the shoe. They make a walking shoe with roll bar support.

Very stable. They may even make a velcro one for those who have trouble tying laces.

I love Zappos but, on my first buy, I'd go to the New Balance store. They will help you get exactly the right size.

I ordered some moose slippers on Zappos at 8:00 one night. They arrived at 11:00 am the next day! No shipping charges and no sales tax!

Pete you can always go the feral route and eschew shoes entirely-will take a few weeks to work back the callouses but once you get 'em , you'll be amazed at the gripping power of the individual toe-plus if you mutter to yourself people WILL leave you alone ;)

I thought this was going to about how your shoes keep taking you into gun stores and making you carry home a new pistol.

May I suggest an appointment with a Podiatrist ? I began having some balance issues (when I developed diabetes) as well as my feet hurting. My wife eventually talked me into going to a Podiatrist. I have heel spurs and didn't know it, but that's not my point.

The point is that talking with an expert on your feet might not only address your issue now but might nip in the bud any issues that may be coming down the road. And, you don't want to buy a pair of shoes that the forum recommends and which work well for your balance but which exacerbate an existing issue and cause you to have other problems.

Around the house I actually wear (Shhhh, don't tell anyone else !) Crocs with a Dr Scholl insert as well. I do not have steps to contend with, however, and they are more for cushioning than for gripping although I do find they work better than when I am barefoot. I'm not recommending them for you, just relating what worked for me and my problems.

By the way, Dr Scholls inserts are money back guarantee so you really can't lose with them. I have tried several of them, sent two of them back and gotten my money back while I continue to use two others.

UPDATE

I decided to get the New Balance MW811BK; got them yesterday and put them on right away... I should have ordered them 1/2" longer. Thanks for your suggestions and recommendations.

Pete, there are a couple of stores in Tulsa that cater to runners and athletes. They have computerized equipment that tells them how you walk and where you need more support in your shoe to help you walk correctly. I would suggest you ask around about a store like this. Yeah, the shoes they recommend are a little more expensive (my daughter's were $150), but it's cheaper than a stay in the hospital with a broken hip. Much less painful, too. ;)

I'm not quite so old as you :) but I wear NB 811's every day. I have plantar fascitis and my orthotics slip right in. My last job had me walking around USPS processing centers (200,000 to 975,000 sq. ft) all day and they have never let me down. NBs seem to be made for heaywights and it takes me about 18 months to break them down. Give 'em a try. I love them.

I have been wearing New Balance models 927 and 576 walking shoes or their predecessors for years and have been extremely pleased. They look nice enough to wear for most occasions and are extremely comfortable. Best of all, they offer a great variety of lengths and widths.
