... to keep me from falling. I keep on selecting/buying shoes that look good, but not right for me. Yesterday I misstepped going down one step to my attached garage and took a tumble - fortunately I didn't break any bones, but sure am sore today. This, I know, is the right place, the right bunch of very savvy people to ask... I need a lightweight, soft leather shoe, with soft, slip resistant soles and soft removable insoles with a good arch. Your suggestions, recommendations are welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

About a year and a half ago I was still tipsy from haveing my nose cut off and was still shakey after it was rebuilt. I was outside moveing something on concrete, had stuff in both hands and got my feet tangeled and fell flat on my face! My wife was walking towards me and said even my head litteraly bounced back from the concrete!
I totaly broke up my thousands of dollars of surgery art! It visibly flattened my nose in close to a inch. I went back to salt lake to the doctor and end result was I aint going to redo it. I already got my girl.

The right shoe is a very subjective thing. I recommend you find a good "Quality" shoe store, an independent that carries multiple lines of shoes, and go talk to them, or to a physical therapist/occupational therapist. I wear the New Balance #961 walking shoe in spring, summer and fall. I do wear a heavier shoe, Danner gortex lined in winter.

Pete, there are a couple of stores in Tulsa that cater to runners and athletes. They have computerized equipment that tells them how you walk and where you need more support in your shoe to help you walk correctly. I would suggest you ask around about a store like this. Yeah, the shoes they recommend are a little more expensive (my daughter's were $150), but it's cheaper than a stay in the hospital with a broken hip. Much less painful, too. ;)

Thanks, Sip and Lader13... I was expecting your replies :D:p
I'm thinking about these shoes:

New Balance 811 : MW811BK $79.99. Available in Sizes 7 D to 16 6E. Free Shipping and Returns - New Balance Tampa.

Pete try the ROckports. Go to the local discount show store in your area that sells rockports, new balance sperrys etc-wear the socks you usually wear and try on as many pr as it takes to get a pair that feels good. Then buy two pair cause sure as shootin'whatever pair is the best is the pair they'll quit making. I wouldn't go for three unless you clear it with the Doctor first :D (I know i'm going to hell for that one ;))
Seriously though-when's the last time you saw your doctor-sounds like you may be loosing some feeling in your feet-my mother in law has that problem brought on by dibeties (or how ever you spell it)-she took a nasty fall a few years ago turns out she had only about half of the feeling left in her feet-Hie thee to thy doctor amigo and get checked out-I'm serious.

Yeah, Caj - I'm going to have to do something, mostly pick-up my feet when I walk and look where I step... my back problems are not helping any... "golden Years" my foot!

Pete, more than shoes you might need an improved way of walking. Tai Chi has been scientifically proven to improve leg strength and balance for us older guys. Sometime back I read an article about this, perhaps in Readers Digest. I took a continuing education Tai Chi course a few years ago and enjoyed it. Great thing is you don't need to run, jump or move fast to do it.

Just a thought.

I am 60 yrs. old and have peripheral neuropathy resulting from being diabetic, two year ago this past August I had bi-lateral hip replacement surgery. I have worn New Balance 381's since that time, they're very comfortable and are one of NB's moderate priced shoes I buy them on sale for $59.95. With a medium weight athletic sock they give me the suppport I need, I also have a pair of dress Rockports for Sunday go to church and dress up occasions. Buy a good quality shoe that is professionally fit so that you are getting the proper size, when they become broken down get a new pair. I was wearing shoes that were too small and too narrow, about a year of near daily wear and moderately priced shoes are due for replacement. Keep the old shoes for chores like car washing and mowing the grass, stuff you wouldn't wear you new shoes for. Oh yea diabetic socks that have less elastic and are therefore less restrictive can help with the discomfort of the neuropathy. Take good care of your feet, find a good moisturizing lotion like Vaseline Intensive Care apply it before bed and after your shower in the morning. Neutrogena Foot Creme works wonders for roughness and cracking and should be used a couple of times a week.

Sounds like you could use a good cane. I have no balance or related problems but usually carry one.

After my little ride trough the sky and landing in a tree with a lot broken the least was a back problem. I developed a left toe problem feels like I have a sock rolled up under big toe. Doctor says it is results of one of my many operations (a nicked nerve or an adhesion) I have tried every pair of shoes known to man.....My personal rating is ! Ecco,2. Sandro Moscoloni 3. Born 4 Mephesto. and K Swiss for sneaker style. Or try a pair of Lynco Orthonics inner soles by Aertrex Worldwide....Sperry for deck shoes with a good inner sole like Dr Scholls full inner sole. New Balance sneaker style aren't bad either. Bass Pro also sells a inner sole quite expensive that works pretty good. You are measured for them. Just my opinion and 20 years trying to find something comfortable and still gives good stability. Keep the toes round. I know it looks like hell but when your feet go the rest of your body follows. Especially your back. Good luck. Ps; If you buy good inner soles take them with you when you are trying on shoes. Sam Lucchese of western boot fame (dec). always said the key is going 1/2 size long rather than staying short and going wider at arch and ball of foot. His motto was "If your going to fit them wrong fit them long". Hope you find the right combination. Shoes and guns have one thing in common cheap isn't usually the best criteria.

Jensen's Shoes on White Bridge Road in Nashville has what you are looking for. They are expensive and the orthotics are custom made for each customer. I have several pair of their Dino Monti Italian lace up oxfords and they have good leather uppers with rubber soles and take the orthotic inserts with plenty of room. Jack Jensen is a Board Certified pedorthist (sp) and he's helped my back with these shoes. I am sure there are other places as well but he's not far from you. Good luck.

Great suggestions!

Like Lynnie and others suggest, the inserts with a fairly comfortable shoe might just be the answer. Thanks folks.

shoes

Red Wing 8664s. A little pricier but they hold up well. Have had 2 pairs in the last 10 years. I do wear New Balance 609s during the warmer months.

I am also a New Balance guy They come in different widths and wear like iron. I wear black walking shoes myself. They are better than SAS and Rockport that have worn in the past.
