Hi, I am new to the forum and hoping to learn from your experience and knowledge of revolvers.

I won a Model 10 4" in one of Bud's auctions last night for $243.
Is this revolver limited to .38 Special or can I shoot +P or anything else?
I noticed other members referring to a number after Model 10.
Does anyone know the model # for these police trade-ins?

This is my second revolver I have owned. I use to own a S&W .357 over 22 years ago which I sold back then. Since then, I have all semi-auto's. So I am really a novice to revolvers again.

Open the cylinder at look at the hinge area. It will say MOD 10-x.
If It just says Model 10 it is a no dash. The 1st time that particular .38 Spl was given a Model #. Also a S/N would be helpful, take it off Butt plate. Or at least the 1st 4 digits followed by xx if you don't want to give the whole number.
...and pics lots of pics

I have a model 10-8 that looks like a police trade in. I shoot +Ps in it.

Welcome and congratulations. That's a good price for a good gun.

Load her up with 158 grain .38 spl ammo and have at it!

You own one of the finest revolvers ever made, the original military and police gun, in production in one incarnation or another for over 100 years! Venerable, dependable and downright fun to own.
Over 6 million sold. The most popular handgun of the 20th century.

Can you tell I like 'em?:D

I bought one of the Bud's 3" guns, and I have found it most accurate with 148 grain wadcutters, but still acceptable with the FBI load.

You have made a serious mistake. #10's are addictive. I imagine you will be posting photos of your next one within a month. Change the stocks to fit your hand (if needed), a few HKS speedloaders, a decent holster/belt combo, and you are good to go. I have a stainless version of that gun with elk antler stocks sitting on my mantle as I type this.

You have made a wise choice.

Yeah. A 10 no-dash pencil barrel 4" square butt started it for me. Diamond magnas and a Tyler T. I have no idea why, at 22, I sold that revolver, but I have been corrected, and now one like it is back in my hands. You will have many more, but the first thing you need to do is SHOOT that sucker a LOT. This will of course just feed your addiction, but it's ok. We're here for you.

Ohio Dept of Corrections Trade in, Model 64,(Altamont grips) From Robertsons trading post G.A. Liked it so much I bought 2 more!I just went to their website, they still have some!. To prove the other guy;s point, I had to stop myself from hitting the "buy it" button. But like the other guy said," I can stop whenever I want....."

Oldblood, those are some purdy grips on that 64!

I may have to get a 10/64 for the wife to shoot one of these days.

To the OP, nice grab, they are pretty inexpensive and super neat wheelguns!

FJ-the Bud's guns have a variety of dash numbers. I bought a 3" from them that is a dash 7, have read of others ranging from about dash 5 to 10. Good solid shooters.

Cpt. Obvious, Altamont has lots of "Purdy" grips for j, k ,and n frames. Check out their website. High quality at a reasonable price. Model 19, silver/black with checkering and med.

It is still in the shipping process.
BUT, I have already ordered snake shot for it when I am up at my property in NC. I went to Walmart when I got off shift this morning and purchased the last of 200 rounds or 158 gr.
Now I am looking at Pachmayr or Hogue rubber grips. Any suggestions?
I also found two holsters and speed loaders on ebay for up in NC.
I purchased the gun mainly for use wearing it on the property in NC, but after reading the forums I just joined, maybe I will get a holster for down here in South Florida. I purchased a SB since I am use to Beretta grips.
I am becoming very anxious in receiving it and going to the range to shoot the heck out of it.
I might even consider a 3" if they become available again.

Fireman, Welcome to the Forum! You should really enjoy shooting a Model 10. I shoot revolvers better than semi autos. I purchased a 10-8 from Buds last year. Wasn't real pretty, but looks much better now. Mine was a Australian Police Gun. (yours may be as well) The sticker on the side plate has gun info on it used by V.P.A. Most police don't shoot as much as we do, so your gun was probably not shot much. Let us know the final results of your purchase. Bob
