I was in Court doing a restitution hearing this afternoon. In Louisiana the miscreant is liable to the victim for all OUT OF POCKET expenses as a result of the crime. That means anything that is paid for third parties doesn't count-they have to file a civil suit for that.
SO the victim was a well known individual of no means, a veteran of the criminal justice system and a long time user of public services. I pointed this out to the Court and suggested that there were no "out of pocket" expenses as,the court could take judicial notice of the status of the victim (in fact the court had prosecuted the victim several time while a DA and knew she was impoverished as she has plead poverty several times to get out of paying fines and court costs) and make an educated surmise that medicaid took care of everything. It must be noted that the victim has never shown up in court to address this issue in spite of being personally served with subpoenas.
Well you think that I had just crapped on counsel table!!! I was accused of being racist ( by the DA) by assuming that the victim was on medicaid. I blew up and said it had nothing to do with racism but was due to the fact that she had been in and out of the system so many times over the years that the court could take judicial notice she was on medicaid.
What the hell?????????????

And then I go to a recently opened mexican restaurant in New Iberia for dinner with the wife (very good btw) and upon perusing the menu I see something titled "Gringo Dinners". At this point I just gave up

Kidding aside, I don't know how you and others in the judicial system
manage to keep an even keel after the street sweeper deposits it's load into the system.
Guess a sense of humor is paramount.

That's pretty much what we did.
We usta live in the Washington DC area and after 911 we had enough of the terrorists, bureaucrats, crack heads and criminals and moved to small town West Virginia.
Best move we ever made.

When I was still working the streets, I would give up 2 or 3 times a night. Then I would manage to get my head wrapped the problems once again and go back out the next night shift and do it all over again because it's what we do. Not try to save the world, just make a small difference some where.

I am retired and I live in the woods. I have always lived in the woods but only retired in 2012. Born and raised in the woods. Ain't never had no desire to live in the city. I feel kinda sorry for those that do. Just too many people. I didn't know that a person is a certain race that has medicaid? The hell is a gringo dinner? Sounds nice.

I have been accused of being a racist too. Funny thing is I have only been accused by white people of being a racist. Never been accuse of it by anyone from any other group that I have hung out or worked with. I find that odd, but oh so typical and the result of political correctness.

I will say I don't care what you look like, even if you are purple with big yellow spots. Are you good for your word and will you hold up your end of the log, if we need to pick it up, is all that matters to me. If you CHOSE to have a bunch of tats and hunks of metal stuck in you, I might be more interested, but once again main factors are will you be straight up with me and will you hold up your end of the log? The restt of it is just "stuff".
