All the threads on edibles made me hungry.

Is there anything better than an ice cream cone packed with flavor of choice on a scorching 90+ degree day ?????

I don't think so..........especially the last bite :)

A single cone?

Yup... a Swenson's "Earthquake"!

If you think a root beer float is good... try making your float with a mug of porter or stout!

To make a really good root beer float,

Get some A&W made with real cane sugar (available in western N.C. and parts of Texas) and any real homemade ice cream made with real sugar. Hagan Daas will do in a pinch though, because it is made with real cane sugar too.

Actually there is....growing up in New Orleans we used to get a concoction known as a "sno-ball" which was shaved ice in a container covered by good sugar syrup of varing flavors. My favorite was strawberry. About 4:30 in the afternoon one of these was quite refreshing-plus the sugar rush would get us kids to supper. ;)
Anybody who grew up in New Orleans knew about Hanson's sno bliz and the stand on Plum St. in uptown.

Ice Cream

Butter pecan is an old favorite of mine for taste and texture. These days, low-fat, low-sugar vanilla or mint-fake-choc chip is in order. Some of my most memorable days were as a soda jerk, free at 10 PM closing time to help myself to a sumptuous serving!!

All wonderful as OP said on a hot day, like today!

Regards,

Dyson

Ahhh yes....."EYECEE'S"........ guy used to come around with a rollin' cart, couple large blocks of ice and numerous bottles filled with the "flavor" of your choice. He must have had about 15-20 bottles.....cherry, grape, watermelon, lemon-lime, chocolate, coconut, etc.
He had this hand-held "shaver" which he ran across the block of ice, deposited the shavings in a paper snow cone then added the "syrup".
He was the main competition for Mr. Softee
Those were the days. :)

There is a custard stand in south Akron, Ohio across from the Goodyear Blimp Hanger, think it's called Stricklands. Back around 1980 when my brother was teaching me how to ride a motorcycle, making a run there for a cone was a very frequent excuse to go for a ride. Their custard was good enough that they were always busy, from opening to closing. Fact is, if we weren't riding bikes, parking would have been a real issue, fortunately there was always some room in the motorcycle area to wiggle in a couple more bikes and everyone always seemed to cooperate in squeezing a couple more bikes.

When I first moved to the Detroit area I was introduced to Stroh's Ice Cream, an enterprise entered into during Prohibition. The absolute best Vanilla I've ever had was Stroh's Philidelphia Vanilla, considering the mildfat level was 28%, that's not too surprizing. Unfortunately, today my frozen treats are limited to Sherbet. I've also had to give up Bacon. Fact is that getting old is getting old.

Here in Pittsburgh our famous iceball purveyor is Gus & Ya Ya's. It's a rolling cart located at West Park for as long as I remember. Used to be hand shaved....not sure if it still is though, been years since I had one.

Here's a couple pics of an ice shaver I have that was my Gramps. He and his older brother sold iceballs from a small goat drawn cart for a nickel apiece when they were lil' tykes. It's likely 80 or 90 years old.

"Snow Cone" was the NYC term when I lived there in 1960-61. You got them from street vendors, watched them shave the ice from a big block.
Cherry was my favorite followed by lemon-lime.
When I lived in Vermont 1956-1959 there was an establishment that served "The Pig's Dinner"-7 scoops with embellishments. IIRC if you ate 2 you got the third one free. And you got a button for eating one.

Place about 1/4 mile from my house, Eastern European immigrant. Make their own ice cream and cones. Double scoop cone one pistacio almond, one coconut pineapple.
