If you can only have one HANDGUN ... what would it be?

I'd have a real hard time not choosing this one.

Glock 19. I currently don't have any, but I do have various handguns. The Glock 19 would be my choice if I could only have one. I can conceal it, it's practically a full sized pistol, 9mm is cheap, LOTS of parts and accessories, and they're very reliable.

Toss-up between 3" 629-5 and Wilson X-TAC Compact. Probably the Wilson - faster reloads and easier to carry magazines. I would miss the versatility of the 629.

Only One Registered?

Depending on the definition of one gun, I think it might be a Sig P250 for me. With one fire control group you can have everything including 380, 9mm, 357 Sig, 40 S&W and 45, with options for sub compact, compact and full size. With this said, if it gets so bad that you can only have "one" handgun the question would be what ammunition will be available?. This system may not be the best or the most preferred but it has the most options for ammo with the "one" gun restriction.

I am a wheel gun lover, but for only having on gun, capacity does become an issue. I can't say enough about my M&P9, with its 19 rounds on board. I carry my shield most of the time, but the nine gives me "felt" comfort over actual comfort. And common wisdom these days is it the SHTF, 9mm may be more readily available than other calibers. I really don't want to test the theory if you get my drift.

S&W 460

The ability to shoot 45 Colt, 454 Casull, and 460 S&W is great. I know big revolvers aren't for everyone, but in my opinion this is a great gun and very easy to handle with .45 cartridges. It actually isn't too bad with Hornady 454 Casull 240gr rounds. Just more loud and violent then most people prefer in their hands.

Going against the grain, I would choose, without hesitation, a pre war Colt Woodsman with a 6" barrel. I would feel no need for anything else unless 500 pound plus animals were trying to murder me on regular occasions. This is the most natural pointing handgun I have ever owned. Made of milled steel and walnut, yet weighs @27 ounces loaded. No plastic, pot metal or stamped tin parts. Hemmingway stated that given a Woodsman in hand he had no fear of any man. Saying you could put the worlds heavyweight boxing champ in one corner of the boxing ring and himself in the other corner with the Woodsman, then ring the bell. He believed, as I do, that the boxer wouldn't make it to the center of the ring. I have many handguns, mostly Smith's, that have never done anything but punch paper. My old Woodsman has the been there, done that, and got the scars to prove it, look about it. I wont mention the things I have shot with it as I would be called a liar. Great guns.

It would come down to a choice between.......my

3 inch, round butt, Model 66-3; or

4 inch custom, round butt, Model 686-nuttin.....

depending on what the world around me looked like!

Well, in my 18 or so years on the internet I have answered this question as many times in numerous threads on numerous sites. Looking back I find it interesting that the answer is always changing. It is always hard to decide for me because I have different ones for different reasons and different purposes. So I have to decide which purpose is most important on any given day and then pic something from that category.

Today I find that my answer to this perennial question has changed yet again. And THIS time I will actually ENJOY answering because the choice for today is easy and the winner has no real competition. Because for the first time my favorite for each category is the same durn gun.
. It is my favorite gun to LOOK AT
. It is the one I have most pride of ownership in
. It feels best in my hand
. It is the most fun to shoot and shoots well
. And it is my favorite CCW.

Do you all realize what this means?!?! If it ever happened that this is the only gun I have or will ever own I'll be perfectly satisfied.

So then, without further adoo, here is the answer to this oft' asked question (for today at least :) )

Here it is. My Ruger SR-1911 .45auto (my apologies for the lousy pics)
