Carson City, Nevada. Not as hot in the summer as Las Vegas, but a little colder in the winter. Close to Lake Tahoe.

Since no mention of NFA , your field is pretty wide open. Comes to your preferences of how close to eith a large metropolitan area , or a more medium sized city.

Lots of sugguestions for TX , AZ , and NV - just keep in mind Gulf Coast humidity and low altitude desert heat respectivly.

North Ga has been mentioned, and it's nice. Sort of along that theme East Tenn and Piedmont NC . Not sure about medical employment in E.TN , but in the Research Triangle area of NC there are at least as many displaced Yankees as native Caroliaians . Not that there would be much of an issue anywhere as long as you aren't obnoxious on purpose to your new neighbors.

Please stay away from Texas, especially the DFW area. There's too many of you folks moving here, 170,000 per year to the metroplex and 1,000 per day to Texas in general. It seems every other license plate is PA, IL, MA, NY, MI, etc. clogging up the highways and sucking up the resources.

Texas, Tennessee, Georgia mtns and most any other place south of the Mason Dixon line would be easy enough for me to call home but there is no place I'd rather live than good ol southern Indiana. I live across the river from Louisville Ky, which is the gun show epicenter of the USA. Pretty fair basketball, fast women and pretty horses, too.

A couple years ago I'd have said come to Colorado. Gorgeous views, depending on where (I live in south-central), not a lot of snow, mild summers, colder winters, but only in snaps. Cheap housing, tons of land available.

Then came the current political climate, so I can no longer in good faith recommend it, although I love it here and as a sixgun shooter, the magazine capacities don't affect my shooting. Don't confuse that with not caring about the current infringement on my 2nd amendment, but it doesn't really affect my shooting.

When the politics swing back the other way hopefully soon, it'll be a great place again.

I don't think that Oklahoma has been mentioned, & I know it wasn't one of the choices given by the OP. I'm back in Texas now but for the past twenty or so years I lived in Oklahoma, first in Tulsa, than in Oklahoma City. I liked both, but prefer Tulsa. It has more of a small town feel than Oklahoma City. One thing I sure miss about Oklahoma is the manner in which people drive! Driving is just a lot more aggressive & hostile in Texas. I get cut off or tailgated every time I go anywhere. I have this theory that the entire state of Texas is a NASCAR training camp, & people are hoping to be discovered. I'm not joking here! One thing I don't miss about Oklahoma is having to worry about tornadoes quite so much.:D

I still love Texas, but if I had to move it would be back to Oklahoma.

San Antonio and the surrounding smaller towns are good locales. Seguin, New Braunfels, San Marcos. The Hill Country is nice too. Fredricksbug, Kerrville.

Plano, Tx is supposed to be the most gun friendly town in the USA.

Bumping this back to the top- thanks so much for your input so far. Not only do I want a red state but also one that has very little chance of turning blue in the future.
As far as the job comments - my wife and I average 100 plus calls and emails recruiting us nationwide so I doubt this will be a factor.
We will be visiting Arizona next month. We were at fort hood for a while so Texas hill country is somewhat familiar to us.

Any particular part of TX? The Gulf Coast has hurricanes, the panhandle seems to be desert, according to bhayles Austin is out, R. G Amos says that Houston is out, and Dallas has the dog-pukin' Cowboys. I know it is a big state but what does that leave?

Actually--on hurricanes. Corpus doesnt get hit near as much as Florida, Ala, and Louisiana and Mexico do; thank God.. Also,we dont flood as bad as they do--Louisiana in particular.

I don't think that any of the proponents of Texas have mentioned that there is no state income tax. Just something else to consider!

Shhhhh--that is a secret.....We dont want a flood of refugees here.

Dont forget Bandera--the Rodeo capital of the world. Ilove that place--only half hour from San Antonio. Also, much of the time--you can rub elbows with Kenny Rogers,Clint Black,Willie Nelson etc--and we normal folks dont give a hoot. :D

When I lived in SA, I lived just off Bandera RD.
Between the loops.

San Antonio Fool! You don't have any of the junk mentioned above. 80 degrees and sunny all week so far.

I left San Antonio off the list because that is the first place I am warned away from. Without pushing the limits of the rules, the demographics don't favor a middle aged white dude.

Around the USAF bases and loop sixteen oh four--aint so bad. The worst side of town for gang activities and such--is the west side.

Arizona or Nevada would be good if you can't take the humidity{I can't}.
You might also consider a state that has no state income tax.
I am in Wyoming{no state income tax and no humidity and gun friendly}, but may not be as warm as you would like. Just over a half million people in the entire state.

I doubt you can go anywhere & not find gang activity these days. Having said that, I agree with Ringo; I would(& do)avoid that area of town.

Charleston or Columbia, SC. I used to live in Beaufort. No one cared about Yankees. There were plenty of New Yorkers. Gun laws were not an issue.

Or you could move to this part of Wyoming. The winter has been milder overall than Michigan was. Wyoming does not require a permit to carry a gun, open or concealed, if you live here. You can hunt with a suppressor. State law essentially allows the arrests of Federal agents if they try to enforce gun laws contrary to State law and allows for making "Wyoming guns" with a claimed exemption from Federal regulation.

You can also carry whatever knife you want.

Sometimes "he needed killing" suffices for a jury, if someone did.

Most all southeastern states honor SC ccw permits, but SC won't honor Georgia. My point is to check the reciprocating states if you want the most freedom to move around.

Some of you guys from Texas gotta stop bragging how great it is there or all of the North East is going to come and i'm gonna be stuck here in upstate n.y. alone :D

Looking for honest opinions from fellow wheel gunners on making a move to a more gun friendly state in the future. The wife and I are in the early planning stages.
This is what I have so far:
Living in New York means pretty much everywhere else has a better gun owning environment ( except maybe nj ca and mass)
So we are looking for:
1)Much better weather ( we have sort of narrowed our search to Texas Arizona Nevada due to the warm weather and low humidity )
I examined the Deep South ( ga fla la miss ala) but the humidity can be brutal I understand, plus some of those states are a bit cumbersome for my professional license so they are off the list.
2) modest cost of living including taxes and housing
3) area friendly to gun owners/ new residents ( I have heard also the Deep South often resents Yankee carpetbaggers)
Open to any and all suggestions
As a military retiree being near a military post to take advantage of some of the resources available would be nice but not required
I would want to be near a gun club that does a lot of formal events like bullseye ppc Icore sass rifle and so on.
Both the wife and I are medical professionals headhunted by lots of recruiters so I do not anticipate jobs being a factor.
I appreciate any and all input especially those from the Arizona and Texas regions.

I'm a fellow NYer and chose Arizona for for similar reasons:

1. GREAT Weather
2. VERY reasonable cost of living and lower taxes. When I moved from NY I felt like I got a pay raise :)
3. One of the most gun friendly states in the Union
4. 3x Major DOD Installations conveniently located in the North (Luke AFB) Central (Davis Monthan AFB) and South (Ft Huachuca)
5. The town outside Ft Huachuca (Sierra Vista) is construction a brand new "state of the art" regional health center opening this Summer.

PM me if you're interested and I can give you details.

Years ago now my name was on a short list to go to Hauchuca and work on a test.
I panicked and got myself non -selected.
Years later I went down there. It's a very neat place!
Especially in the hills West of town. It goes low heading East toward Tombstone.
