Is $550.00 the magic number for Model 10s?

This past weekend at the gun show I was working at,
I had three people pass my table each trying to sell their model 10s.
One was a 2" square butt, one was a 3" round butt, and the last was a 4" square butt.
They were all in good condition (about 95%) with what appeared to be the original stocks.
No boxes, just the guns alone.
Each one wanted $550.00 for their gun. It got me to wondering
where each one came up with the number $550.00.
Out of curiosity, I checked the Blue Book of Gun Values. It has
the Model 10 listed for $500.00 in 98%. I don't know who they
thought was going to pay that much for a Model 10 at a gun show.
Anyway, JMHO and rambling.

$550 for a nice 3" model 10, perhaps; the others were a bit optimistic.

Stu, gun shows are an unusual environment. I dont think they understand basic economics. I work shows with a FFL buddy and was offered a ratty 39/box for $3,000.00 USD. Shows have become more entertainment than business. Al J. and I take it in stride. Best.

Here in my area a ratty looking S&W 10, will be priced at $300.00 to $350.00; for a 4" barrel, square butt version. A 2" or 3" barrel, round butt will be higher priced.

I have a blue, 4" HB, SB, S&W 10 in the classifieds. Most people here would call it a 95% gun if they were selling it, but it is not that clean. Both sides of the barrel have holster wear and there are a few light freckles on it. In the local market it is competitively priced. I have only had a handful of inquiries on it.

That pretty well says it all. Of course, back when I knew it all, a Model 10 was the equivalent of a bottom line Chevy with rubber floor mats, no radio, and no heater.

Now I kind of like 'em.

In my day, I could buy a Brand New Model 10 at the local Hardware Store for $89.95! Model 36's were a little cheaper! $79.95! Boy I miss those days! And nickel was $5 higher!

My son has no use for a fixed sight K frame, none what-so-ever. Nor the big brother on steroids, my 58. I have told him the 58 needs to go to Sheriffoconee, but he will throw the two 65's, three 64's, and three 10's in the trash.

I don't know what I did wrong.

Just to clarify, I am not knocking the Model 10s.
I have five of them from 2", 3", 4", and 6" in all different
configurations.

It just seemed strange that three people were all asking the
same price (a bit high in this area) for that gun.

In my neck of the woods, a 4" tapered barrel Model 10 square butt in Very Good* condition goes for about $400.

A 2" round butt model 10 in Very Good condition goes for about $500.


* As defined in the S&W Standard Catalog, and not as used on the gun forums, where "very good" can mean "not much pitting" and everything else is "Like New."

A 5 inch matching everything Mod 10 from my birth year, nineteen hundred and sixty two.

Probably to much but it was a "gotta' have" with the condition and the birth year connection.

It was not too much, not with box and dox and, most importantly, the satisfaction you have with the acquisition!

Just to add another data point and an observation on the price trend, it seems that Model 10's and older M&P's have leaped up to the $550 range in the past year or so. (I'm in Nashville.)
I bought more than one before the sudden price jump which were in the $300 - $350 range.
I don't know why the sudden change happened, but it happened here, too. At the last show I was offered two different M&P's for the magic number mentioned above: $550.
It's the vast right wing conspiracy at work...

I just got a 10-7 snubbie for $339 on a whim. Damn, I REALLY like this gun. Smooth trigger with Pachmayr Gripper Grips with Finger Grooves. There was a 10-11 for the same price, but I just liked the 10-7. I am seriously thinking of getting another Model 10 with 4" barrel from Buds to rework and personalize.

Granted, I have a Shield for everyday use, but I am thinking of getting a shoulder holster to use my subbie as a back up gon when I ride my bike or horse.

Around here in good condition but no extras $350 - $400. Not long ago I passed on two 2in barrel model 10s, both in great condition, both for $350 ea

M-10s

Not only does everyone try to get $550 out of a M-10, that's what
they want for any fixed sight 38. They probably produced more
service type guns than all the other J-k- n with adjustable sights.
The 10 is a good gun for purpose it was made for, probably the
best. I had a 6" m10 that was perfect mechanically, but beat on
finish. I filed dove tail and fitted adjustable sight to it, silvered
front ramp to it. Made perfect poor man's K38, the guy who talked me out of it still brags on how good it shoots. With all
those 4" police guns in circulation ,I can't understand the prices
either.

S&W may have made a ton of model 10s but, I seldom see them in the used gun counters of the local stores. I guess folks are hanging on to them because they are such great shooters and SD weapons. I can understand that point of view because my 10-6 is one of thel last guns that I would part with.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people come up with a fat retail price for an item,any item in fact,and then don't understand why a dealer won't pay them that amount.
