Is $550.00 the magic number for Model 10s?

Those two mint in the box 10's pictured earlier in this thread would each be $ 795 around here . A run of the mill ,nice shooter grade 10 would be $ 375 - $ 400 . If it's a pinned barrel and mint in the original box , it's an "investment" gun in todays world . Vintage guns in that condition are getting Very hot right now . Yes, they made alot of model 10's , but how many are still mint, in the original box ?
It's like finding a '65 Mustang in a garage . They made a half a million of them , but how many are still mint condition with 2 miles on the odometer ? Collectors go nuts over this stuff, and the world of collectable handguns is really heating up . Ten years from now , we may be looking at prices double or tripple current prices .
Everything made now is plastic, or has a lock , none of that stuff will ever be collectable . Nobody wants to collect state quarters , but those CC Morgan dollars are hot . In the handgun world, if it's a 30+ years old high quality gun (Colt, Ruger, Beretta ,Smith & Wesson, Browning etc.) mint or near mint condition , it's going up in value.

I would say if someone was asking $550.00 for a really nice Model 10, they're asking high retail IN THIS AREA. An average run of the mill 10 will be tagged about $450-475. Box and stuff will drive that higher.

A Taurus "K-frame" type will be in the $350.00 range. Shoot my LGS has an Arminius 357 in the case for $275.00.

IF I carried a nice Model 10 to a gun show, I'd be ASKING $500.00 or so myself. I can always come down, but I can't suddenly change my mind and go up if I find a couple of people after it.

In my day, I could buy a Brand New Model 10 at the local Hardware Store for $89.95! Model 36's were a little cheaper! $79.95! Boy I miss those days! And nickel was $5 higher!

Oh, I remember those days too. BUT, I was only making $550 a MONTH.

What is really obscene is the price of new pick-up trucks these days. I've bought houses for a lot less money.

There are still some bargains out there.
I got this one a couple months ago for
about half the price quoted in the OP.
Figuring the T-grip, a little minor 'smithing
by a local guy who has been working on
my S&W revolvers for 40 years, and gas
and a nice lunch for me and my wife on
the Sunday afternoon 140 mile round trip,
it still came in at less than $350. :D

I know where a 10-5, 4" standard barrel, RB, non-factory nickel gun is for $200.00, but the nickel is flaking off the back strap. I made the owner a trade offer and she is mulling it over. I know a guy looking for such a gun at such a price.

M10 pricing

Just sold this NIB 4" 10-5 to a good friend for $450.
10-5-4.jpg

Seemed fair to both of us.

I certainly wouldn't criticize a person for wanting to cut a "good friend" a deal but I think that disqualifies this from being a typical average price. A like NIB model 10 could certainly fetch an extra $100 at one of the auction sites in the condition yours is in, I wish I had more friends like yourself. Kudos

It is not entirely that the gun prices are up as much as the valuation of the dollar is down.

shooter grade are available out there

one of my favorite ammo websites has used model 10's for $300-$529
and model 64's for $470-$530... all shooters from good to very good plus...

J&G sales...

It's seems odd to me Blue Book would be on the high side. The last edition I
Bought was 2012, and values were absurdly low. They valued a 100% 624 at $475, not much more than original MSRP. Now I know they've gone crazy since 2012, but even then that was about $200 low.

I don't buy BB any more.

There's 64s out the wazoo in Gumbroker, CAI re-imports, I think.

Model 13a, too.

There's one guy usually at the local gun show who has a half-dozen M&Ps on his table that look as if they fought their way through WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and he has a $200-$250 price tag on them. Don't know why, but they strike me as being prison guns.

A lot of these guns were bought new, and used, and somewhere along the way they became truck guns, or toolbox guns, or tackle box guns. That kind of life for a blued revolver makes them look like they were ridden hard and put away wet. Most shooters looked down on them for being less of a revolver than something with target accessories, or stainless guns, and they were treated as such. A good comparison would very well be some of the muscle cars today. When they were new, many were a plain jane, rubber floor mat, 3 on the tree form of transportation. No one saw them on the street and drooled over them. Find one today in the shape some of these revolvers pictured are, and your view of the car is completely different.

Model 10

There are still some decent deals out there, but becoming fewer and farther between. I bought this one for $350.00 a couple years ago:)

I picked up a 10-5 last year for $150. It shot fine. Somebody had taken pliers to the extractor rod in a bad attempt to disassemble the cylinder. I picked up a nice cylinder, extractor, and yoke assembly for $70 and some Pach grips. Gave it my grandson last Christmas. He has shot it hundreds of times, and I'm having a time keeping him in ammunition. That's about the cheapest M10 I located in 2014. In contract, I picked up 3 other nice ones ranging from one made in 1924 to a 5 inch barrel 10-5 in 95% condition for $250. No boxes or papers with any of them, but the easiest thing to find is a M10 blue box and papers for cheap. Just found pictures of the 1924ish gun and the 1950 snub. . .both pre M10. Can't find a picture of the 10-5. At $250 I buy these things all day long and they are still out there.
