Understand it is a 5 shot but why not put one more round in the speed strip, just in case? I would hate to think you were one short if you needed it.

I realize this is a very old thread, but maybe you'll still see this, besides it's a great thread. It took me a while, but it finally dawned on me to do the same thing. It doesn't take up any more room in my pocket to put one extra round in it. I carry anywhere from 2 to 4 speed strips at any given time and if I have 4, that give me almost another full cylinder. Granted I'll probably never need to even use the gun in self defense (at least I hope not) and even if I did, I highly doubt I'll go through 25 rounds! But I said to myself, why not carry an extra round in it? Doesn't make it harder to reload and it actually makes a lot of sense. Again, I'll probably never need to use my gun or all those rounds, but we don't carry guns because it's guaranteed that we'll never need it right? We carry because it's always possible, so why not have the extra round per strip? I've carried them full ever since.

My 60-4 .38 Special Heavy Barrel with target sights never ceases to impress me at the range. I put 15 shots into under 4 inches (2nd shot flier due to a flinch-my wife fired her gun and I jerked the trigger!) at 50 feet standing. I've shot several sub 2 inch groups with this gun at 50 feet.

Hey, I have a question for you, and hopefully you'll see this as this is a very old thread. You're not the first person I've seen who said their Model 60 with the full lug is a -4. I thought before maybe it was a typo because I think the -14 also has the full lug. I have seen pictures of a -7 and it still didn't have that shroud on it. Did Smith and Wesson make their -4's all with those shrouds? Is it a 38 special only? I had previously thought that the -8 or -9 was when they first did that. I do know that Smith did that with the Model 36 in the late 80's or early 90's (I believe) so did they do that to the Model 60's as well at the same time? Please help me clarify. I like to know everything possible about these guns. Thanks in advance.

Just out of curiosity, did it have anything to do with the internal lock? I'd imagine it didn't, just curious.

Glad to see someone who has a set of brass b.... Well, you get the idea. I was starting to think I was the only person who'd put magna grips on a J frame 357. Glad to see someone else put there doesn't have padded, cushioned, soft rubbers on their compact pocket cannon. Very nice!

I'm just curious, I can't really tell what the two guns are in the picture. You said 638, what is the other one? I can tell it's an Airweight stainless something. 637?

Hey, just curious here. The 640, did those not have the grip safety like the original Model 40's? I'm guessing not since it's a no dash, but I just wanted clarification so I will be more educated in the future.

While I'm at it, I might as well share my J frames. I absolutely LOVE J frames!! I really like the Detective Specials from colt because of the extra round, but it's to my understanding that they are just slightly bigger than the J frames.

My all time favorite revolvers include the following.....

1.) Blued, snub, RB Model 10 with pinned barrel and original magnas

2.) Blued, snub Model 19 with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder and original magnas

3.) Blued, snub Model 15 with pinned barrel and original magnas

4.) Blued (as I don't believe the snubs were made in nickel but either way the blued would be my favorite), snub Model 586 and it must have magnas on it. I do NOT like the finger groove combat grips. Thought I would until I held a gun with them on it.

5.) Blued, snub, RB Colt Diamondback with magna style grips on it. It could be either the one with the full RB handle or a shortened D frame grip with RB magna style grips

These 5 were my favorite revolvers period. I had held a RB Model 36 at a gun show before I bought my first Chief and I just did NOT like the way it felt in my hands. I almost thought I wouldn't even want a Chief anymore, bolt then it dawned on me to buy one with a square butt. So without even holding one to know for sure, I bought one online and I am in looooove!!! I bought a nickel one and decided I had to have a pair, so I then bought a blued one. As of now, the Model 36 is also in my list of all time favorite revolvers.

These are the only two J frames that I own currently, but there are many more I want. A model 31 snub, a 3 inch tapered barrel Model 36 square butt, a model 38 and 49 (I've accepted the fact that some are only RB), a snub Model 60 with pinned barrel and SB, and a Model 40. As far as new ones go, the Model 60 and 649 in 357 I like as well.

I love when old threads get brought back to attention. Some people do not like it, and on some sites the moderators do not like it and in fact they will close it. I don't see why. I am newer to gun forums and I've missed a lot of great conversation and I love to chime in.......even if it is ten to fifteen years later!

That bottom one looks just like the Steve McGarret (Hawaii 5-0) Chief's Special, except his was not an Airweight. The grips are the same too and I believe his was a flat latch.

DANG! I LOVE that 640! Nothing I love seeing more than some putting magna grips on a gun, especially one that doesn't come with them AND a 357. That is really cool looking. I love the wood on the Smiths. It is so beautiful! I'm thinkin about gettin a new 649 and putting the same kind of grips on it. Very very nice sir.

The nickel-plated Model 37 that I posted in 2012 is gone, swapped out for a 1963-vintage Model 12-2. I couldn't see the sights on the shiny little thing. This Model 642-2 replaced it. Eventually I'll replace the lock.

That's a pretty darn cool collection. I like that you have all 3 types of Chief in several different styles from old to new. That's pretty cool. I wanna one day have a similar set up with all blued, all old school snub Models 49, 40, 36, 10, 19 and the same in nickel, all with original magna grips and then complete the same set up with the old school Airweights in blued and nickel 37, 38, 42 and 12. That is my ultimate goal, but I will probably never achieve that. A blued and nickel 15 snub in there too for good measure. Unfortunately I only have 3bof those at the moment so I have a long long way to go.
