lets see your in car setup

A retired police officer friend of mine, who now works for the FOP, says the best/easiest draw from seated in a vehicle is from the inside of the left ankle (for a right hand shooter). I don't have an ankle rig yet but that was his educated opinion.

MY dad has carried a Colt DS for past 55 years and as far back as I could remember, he always had it on his person...I intend to keep following in that tradition.

Just curious... How does he carry it? Belt? Pocket? I figure a guy has learned a thing or two after carrying for 55 years.

well I have found that when in the seat that my snubbie fit's in my chest pocket on my leather jacket, that gives my 5 shots then i need to get to the 1911 or the SW99 and I figure with my win. PDX1's in the 638 and the SW99 I will be fairly effective, and FWIW I can get the snubby out of that jacket pocket in less than 2 seconds and be ready to shoot

Detective Special in my pocket, and my large gun (1911, .44, .357) between my right hip and the console. As far as the "shoot or drive" guys, that's great advice...when you can, sometimes you are in the car and can't drive away/at them, like in dead stopped traffic or when the car is stuck. That's why some people have a gun they can get to in the car easily, rather than writhing and fumbling around in your seat trying to get to the gun on your hip or zipped up somewhere. No dogma covers all situations.

For road trips I clip an IWB to the seatbelt, belly button area and pull my shirt over it.

Horizontal shoulder rig - I was always partial to the Miami Classic from Galco as being reasonably priced but working fairly well. The bargain basement UTG model is serviceable if you only use it when driving. You'll need to wear a jacket, but that's what AC is for.

You can also keep a gun under your arm attacked to the side of your armor's carrier panels. (Armor is great when driving, helps minimize impact trauma. It's probably saved as many people in car accidents as in gun fights.)

I use a heavy duty nylon strap like a belt to attach a Fobus paddle holster to the underside of my steering column. I simply transfer the gun from my hip to under the column when I get in the car. I am a big guy and it gets a little uncomfortable carrying on my hip on long drives. But as said before I do not ever leave my gun in the car unless absolutely necessary, and if I do I use the key to disable it. So that if someone does steal my car, my gun, or both they at least have to track down a PT111 key before they can use it.

I've found that left ankle carry is too easily revealed when exiting the vehicle.

The left leg is first out of the vehicle, and my pant leg almost always rises up in the process.
