Letter Coloring Question

Juezahn...I saw your ghosting and have the same issue. Now that the paint has dried, what's your method to cleaning the ghosting area up?

On the FIRE SAFE area, it was a wet washcloth since that area is only crayon. For the paint on the grip, it was a used scotch pad, water, and elbow grease. Probably would have been easier with CLP or weak paint thinner on a cloth, but since there wasn't much to clean up, I didn't use either of those.

I let the paint dry overnight and probably should not have before wiping it clean. Will non-acetone nail polish remover hurt my frame? I do have some CLP that I'm going to try first...

Non-acetone nail polish remover is what I recommend. (of course, I've only used it on nail polish when I did my 40c) It will not hurt the polymer. It's the acetone that will damage things.

I used the Testors model paint. I have done 6 guns so far. Here us what I have learned.

1- Clean the area well.
2- Cover the entire lettering area. It will look like a paint stripe on the gun.
3- Use a hair dryer to fully dry the paint. Also helps to completely fill the engraving.
4- Only do one color at a time. If you do 2 at once they have a tendency to bleed into each other. Do one, wait til fully dry and complete, then do other.
5- Once paint is dry use a white lint free cloth to wipe off excess. I have used gun cleaning patches with good success. Make sure the cloth is stretched tight on your finger. Wet it with CLP. Work back and forth over the paint with constant pressure. It will take a while but will start to come off. Rotate to a clean spot on the cloth and apply more CLP frequently. Once it starts coming off it goes pretty quick. Wipe with a clean dry cloth several times throughout the process.
6- Once cleaned up, hit it again with the blow dryer. Helps to really set the paint in the engraving.

Works and looks great. Way more durable than crayons.

Thanks for posting on how you did your lettering. I decided to give it a try, so I took out one of my cheap lowers to practice on. I only did part of the lower for now, as I was learning. I did find that the larger letters & gun emblem were harder to fill in than the small print. I also got a little sloppy as you can see just below the Cal.Multi.

He was referring to the smudging on my top pic from when I first colored my SAFE and FIRE. I was referring to the MOE grip, the last pic, between the HUNTER and the scope part, there is a tiny bit of black there from when I slipped.

Ahh, I see. Don't forget about the goo-gone, guys. It is harmless and has citrus in it.

I used Goo-Gone on a Tervis Tumbler one time and it ate it up. I just assumed it would do the same thing to the 15/22 lower. Not true? Have you actually tried it?

Goo-Gone will not affect the polymer.

Hmm, It shouldn't. It is not chemical based. I never had any issues.

The site refers to taking the shine off of glossy plastics. None of those are firearms-grade polymers.

Ha, I did. I tried it for a while but still prefer the pachmayr tactical grip the because of the rubber grip nubs.

Just get something sharp like a straight pen and you can remove that paint at the bottom. Lightly scrape it out and use CLP and scrub that area real hard. If you happen to remove some paint from the lettering above it, you can just redo that part. I have found that adding a second coat a few days after the first, really gets everything perfect.

Last night there wasn't much on TV, so I got my M&P15-22 out of the safe and did some letter coloring. I used Testors paint.

I have plenty of those paint pens, use em for painting on canvas. Would you think some painters tape placed tightly around the lettering and just fill her in then pull the tape off would work? That way you don't have that light haze smear from the wipe off process. Just suggesting, what I use to do when painting different layers and such.

That should work fine. But honestly, I just redid mine with green crayon slathered all over the area and the color looks great. A little goo-gone citrus and no smearing or any marks left over.

I need some advice for a different gun. The etching is VERY light and shallow. My usual trick of acrylic paint and wiping it off didn't work. Does crayon work for REAL shallow stuff?
