I'm looking to get a .45, but uncertain what to get. Rather than going the easy route, and getting another M&P I find myself yearning for a metal gun in this purchase. I love the beauty, the history, and the accuracy of a 1911, but not sure how comfortable I am with the condition of "cocked and locked". The idea of buying a brand new 1911 is awfully tempting, but I find myself constantly on Gunbroker looking for a 645 or 4506.

This probably wouldn't be a carry weapon for me, but maybe a nightstand gun to replace my M&P9. I'm not worried about the weight or even size because of this so it leaves a lot of choices on the table so to speak. Also, if I pick up a used 2nd or 3rd generation auto, does S&W still stand behind those pistols with their lifetime warranty?

Appreciate the insight, and thanks in advance. :)

I'm relatively new to S&W gear, but I believe the answer is yes to your lifetime warranty question. Some of the grizzled vets here can confirm or deny. I've never heard of S&W not standing behind their lifetime warranty.

One thought for consideration. If this is going to be your bed nightstand gun and you want/like nightsights, just be sure to factor that in to your decision. Will take some $ to replace the likely dead or dimmed night sights that would come on a 2nd or 3rd gen. I'm in that boat right now. But figure once I have replaced my dead ones with new ones, I'll have a heck of a nice nightime self defense gun (5903TSW).

Good luck! At the very least, it sure is fun browsing GB or any of the other sites. :D

I shoot several 1911's in the normal pistol games and formerly in bullseye pistol matches. They are gteat guns with excellent triggers for match/target use. For self defense purposes I want a gun without any extenal safeties or hammer thus my preference for the S&W M&P, or Glock in semi auto's or a S&W revolver. For bedstand use I would compromise on a S&W 3rd generation semi auto but not a cocked and locked 1911.

Dog,
The all steel 4566 model is very popular here and I would highly recommend it for the use you specified.

Here is a 4566TSW with some PC customizing

Grinder, nice looking gun. What kind of sights do you have on it? Night or the 3 white dots? I have a 5903TSW that I was thinking about turning in to a house gun b/c it has the integrated rail and I could put a light on it just like you have done with your TSW. The night sights that came on it are dead.

Heybrowndog, that might be an option for you.

I just bought a 4506 off the forum. The frame and mag were already refinished when I bought it. I stippled the grip, re-bead blasted the slide and installed the Trijicons. If you do not mind a larger handgun, it would be a very good choice for a home defense pistol. Unfortunately, no rail for a tactical light. I think a 4566TSW would be your best choice then.

I had a 1911 and can say the 4506 is as close as you can get without actually having a 1911. Its stout, reliable, feeds any and all ammo, and laser accurate (mine is at least). You can find PD trade in's for pretty cheap (350-400ish) pretty regularly. Mine is and aside from some outer wear, its a fantastic weapon.
