Afternoon gentleman,

I'm looking to get into a model 19.(I've owned plenty of 686's/681's and 581's even have a couple model 66's)It to me looks like it's almost the perfect .357 platform.(something about that blue steel) What I like to do is purchase 2 guns, one for its collectable value and one shooters grade gun. Now my question for the greater wealth of knowledge here is which is the better dash model gun to use in excess? I see a lot of dash 3's and a lot of dash 5's is one better than the other ? I would prefer a P&R gun, and I'm not interested in any newer model 19 "classic's"

P.S. I'm quite certain I'm going to have to save for the collectable model 19 no dash 4 screw  at 3500 for the last at auction I'll start with a shooters grade one first.:D

and a Combat Magnum or no-dash for collecting.

Course that still leaves you with the question of 4" or 2 1/2"....... the 6"guns are IMO is an "also ran"; with a few 3" and 5" guns out there.... somewhere.

Yes I forgot to mention that the 4in variant is my ideal size... the 3 in model 19 I would sell alot of guns to get ahold of

For a shooter, they are the most plentiful and the cheapest to acquire. The 19-2s and earlier models are more costly. If you want to acquire the most collectible Combat Magnum, you should acquire one from the first year of 1956.

Well, for my money, I would be looking for a 4". I like to shoot at 25yds+, and 2 1/2" is limited. However, if you are into the 7 yard shooting, that I see posted a lot, then 2 1/2" may be right for you. But you can do that well with a 4" also

If you want a P&R Mod. 19 ... It'll have to be a -4 or earlier. Once the 19-5's came out it was post 1982, and P&R went bye bye.

Just because this thread needs some pics:

-4, I prefer the gas ring on the cylinder and a 2.5" barrel. One of the sexiest pieces extant!
Here's one of mine, a pinto.

I've had a 19-3 Nickel 3.5" with checkered banana stocks loved it wish I still had it.
I just picked up yesterday a Nickel 19-4 (77-82). P&R, nice gun I got in a trade now I'm not a long barrel guy so not sure if I'll keep it yet or not if a 2.5" or an N frame 27 or 28 came along it might be gone but either no dash to a -4 you can't go wrong.
Ps one not use heavier weight bullets in 29s 148/150 but 158/173 better the 110 125 130s are none to crack forcing cones and other issues with 29/66s that you don't have with 586/686s , just FYI.

In late 1955 the K Frame 357 Magnum was designed. It was called "Combat Magnum" Actual production started in 1956 and in 1957 the Combat Magnum became a Model 19. Mine is before the model number began..a true Combat Magnum. Nothing more.
