Been checking out the forecasts and looking at the satellite pictures. Helene is only rated as a tropical storm at the moment, but it is already huge. All the forecasts show it as a major hurricane by 2pm Thursday as it heads up the Gulf towards Tallahassee. Things can change, but I reckon all the members in that area need to watch out.

Latest news report predicts it will intensify to Cat 3 by landfall. It's also landing in the Big Bend area which will focus the storm surge to 8-12 feet. You can go inland several miles in that area and still be less than that above sea level.

A lot of people will probably remember it as Hurricane Hellene...
What's with the "H" names? Last one to come our way that started with "H" was in 1989, some little blow named Hugo. I'm in the western NC foothills, local news predicts as much as 10 inches of rain on Friday. We're already getting T-storms ahead of that dumping 2-3 inches every time one comes through.

Anybody got an ark they aren't using?

What strikes me the most reading the forecasts is the expected speed of this storm. It is going to be moving at 20 mph or more.

I've always said I'd take a fast moving hurricane over a stalled out tropical storm. I'm sure it will slow down as it picks up strength.

Crazy how they can predict them so far out. I check out Mikes Weather Page. I think he lives in the Tampa area. He's been making good calls a couple few years now.

If it follows the cone I'll be cool, but I'm gonna get up brain damaging early tomorrow to get my yard work done. Calling for rain to start tomorrow afternoon.

Folks evacuate to here. We have had little rain in the last week, boiling hot. NWS predicting 2-4" of rain on Thursday. St Johns Water Management has increased "flow" South. I have enough Tuna, Sardines, peanut butter, pasta and sauce for 2 weeks. What else can I do, too hot to shoot, 2 more weeks or so to "shooting season" around these parts. Best of luck to all who meet Helene. Joe

this am stats had it upgraded to a 3. changed this afternoon, wife flying out of Orlando Sat. late afternoon. she'll call me when they are on the runway.

Not liking this one bit. This one's predicted to spool up quick, like Wilma. Folks in the Big Bend are gonna get hammered. Expecting a lot of rain and respectable winds here. Power outage is almost assured. :(

Looks like I will be in the "safe zone" where we are. After Hurricane Ian 2 years ago this one looks like a minor sprinkle to us. I am sure the people who live north of Tampa and in the Panhandle are going to be hit very hard though.

That said, things could change with a slight turn inland. Mother Nature does not follow road maps. We are as prepared as possible (I always stay that way, no matter if it's hurricane season or not) as one never knows what's in store. I wish anyone in harms way the best of luck and hope that Helene turns into a gentle breeze.

They have warnings out for the whole state now.

Yes, they err on the side of caution and don't want to be held responsible for downplaying any weather that could potentially become life threatening. Plus....... they love all the hype and higher prices they charge for commercials because more people are watching.

That said, I do not take these things lightly and will pay close attention. We are prepared as humanly possible - filled the tank, bought some extra Rib Eye Steaks and an extra bottle of Bourbon. LOL. Plenty of Cigars and ammo. :D
