M&P 15-22 Picture Thread

I think ive had my 15-22 about a month now. 1500 rounds that were flawless except for the first mag which i didn't load correctly.

Accessories:
Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40 with low rings and 1/2" riser.
Bushnell TRS-25 red dot on a Yankee Hill 45 degree mount.
Barrel shroud from the DIY thread here.
UTG butt pad.
CAA cheek rest/saddle.
CAA Rail covers.
Under barrel red laser.
Hogue mini universal grip cover.

This has been a fun gun as my "Work" guns i use for ccw and HD i don't add things or change them.

I really like the Nikon and Bushnell setup even tho its not the most popular way to do optics.
I can still hold a good cheek weld and tilt the gun a few degrees and go from 100' shots too 15' shots with no changes or issues.

That's a really nice set up, very close to what my plans have been for awhile now. I have both an M&P 15OR and 15-22. On my 5.56 I have a Leupold Mark AR 3-9X40 and I've been wanting to add a small reddot to it for close range stuff too. I've considered using the Daniel Defense 1 o'clock offset mount or the YH 45 degree mount you've got. Question: I'm using extra high mounts on my Leupy and am wondering if I could get either of these mounts to fit under the main tube of the scope to bring the reddot up closer to the sight plane? Also, this would bring the reddot closer to my eyes but I don't know if this is necessary or not, I see yours is mounted clear out on the fore-rail. Does it make any difference when using as small of a reddot as the TR-25 is?

You mention that yours is not the most popular way to do optics. What makes you say that? I think its pretty sweet giving you the best of both worlds.

Ive tried 1" risers with tall rings and the YH mount wont allow my to attach it under the scope. It would bring it closer to the eye ,Yet it will be further from the barrel axis. That is a big issue when your talking close range shots. I don't like high mounts, Nor high rings and this is as about as high as i can go with the scope and it be acceptable to me.
I have tall rings which are perfect and about 1/4" lower than this setup, But i loose alot of flexibility in ring placement and keeping them on the receiver and off the barrels mounts. I dont mind a 1/4" higher sacrifice from more flexibility.

The DD 1 o'clock may allow you to mount under the scope, I cant say for sure. But im pretty sure you may need more clearance.
Id say it would be better or just as good as what i have if you went that route off the for-grip.
Having it further from the eye actually makes it easier to pick up targets faster as your seeing "everything" first and then the red dot.
It looks like its sticking further out than it really is, I can tilt the gun just slightly and my plane stays the same from scope too sight.
When i first considered this plan i thought "Great, now the guys at the range will think im shooting my rifle "Gangsta" style" but the tilt is so slight its no where like laying the gun on its side.

They make 1" scope mount ring with a weaver end so you can mount your sight off the scope, But that throws the sight into a big tilt which is hard to sight in as it will put it at 90 degree too almost 180 degree's. Mounting on top of the scope is really bad since the bore axis is so far away close shots will have to be compensated for alot when you go past the sighted in mark.

"Edit" I went back and looked at the DD mount and it does extend out alot further from the rail than the YHM mount i used, So if there is a chance of mounting under the scope that mount would be the one to try. Looking at it tho it may also have more angle to it once its layed flat on the top rail, It wasnt designed to work that way and 10 degrees is not the angle it will produce from there. Id guess it would have a 60 degree angle when laid flat, Making a not so good option.
The YHM mount is 45 degrees no matter which way its turned so it worked out well for me.

I too think it gives the best of both worlds also, But there are so many options out there that you don't see this style much.

I wanted to shoot past 50' and with my bad eyes a 1x red dot thats my max range. I didn't like the magnifier route as you have to take it on and off or swing it to the side and back.
So either i bought a $1200 ACOG or a scope, That was an easy decision.
I see options of mounting on top of the scope with their red dots which is the worst way possible imo.

But again i mainly said that as you don't see optics done this way alot, But i love it.

Ok guys, this is my first post. I've been lurking in this forum a while and have to say that I learned much about how this rifle works (or not) and accessories for it before even getting my hands on one! I knew how to disassemble it, clean it, do a trigger job and so many thing that when I made the decision to go and get one I knew exactly what I was getting into!

I wanted a rifle to use in competition (steel challange and even two gun) and it has been fun. I do have to say that I was getting plenty of FTFs but when it worked it was great to shoot. I lost my last match due to the rifle failing in the last two stages (seven total) and that's when I decided to send it back to S&W.
I have to say that the rifle was there maybe two days, it took a little over a week to get there and back (this was just last week) and I got it with the new specs (blue springs) and two new magazines! I took it to the range yesterday for a quick test and shot 4 mags as fast as I could press the trigger and 100 round went down the pipe faster than I could say "S&W M&P15-22 Rifle" no issues what so ever. Then I fired 200 more round with new and old mags and 100% reliable!! so things are looking good so far.

Sorry about the long post but this is the first one and wanted to express my gratitude to all of you that have made comments on this rifle, good or bad!! you always learn from both sides of the story...

Anyways this is a picture thread and...this is my rifle, there are many like it, but this one is mine...

DasFriek, I must say that is one of the best homemade pvc shrouds I have seen so far. Everyone else wraps tape around it and that seems to make it look like a kid made it for a toy.

The key was a light sanding and then a plastic specific flat matte rattle can spray job.
I also started with black pvc so if it gets scratched it wont show.
Im glad everyone likes the looks of my toy, And its functioned just as well also.

I gotta admit, Im considering a real suppressor and call this toy done as a project and just shoot and enjoy it from here on out.
I do like those angled fore grips which wouldn't make the gun look over done and be usefull, But i generally shoot off a bench but with spring coming that wont hold true.

I think i mentioned i have my "Work" guns for CCW and HD wich i dont accessorize or mess with and keep them stock for reliability reasons. So this .22 has been my creative outlet.
Im thinking of a Ruger Charger to trick out next, Or add a .22 rimfire kit for my 1911.

I finally got out to sight in my 3x9. It's actually only the 3rd time shooting the gun itself and the first time I've ever sighted in a scope but I think I did okay.

The left image, 3 corners is at 25 yards where I started sighting in. The right image was then at 50 yards; I need more practice there.

I get 1 FTF (where the bullet stands up in the magazine) about every 50 rounds. I only have about 600 rounds through it so maybe she's still getting warmed up.

Still very happy with it.

I totally agree. First thing I did was put the red dot on it, second thing I did was shoot it!!

Since then I've gone crazy buying all the upgrades I wanted for it but I continue to shoot it as much, and as often, as possible while I wait for the various parts to arrive. I put another 350 rounds through it again last night. Shoots great and I cannot wait until I get everything installed on it.

You guys need to get out and shoot! Don't wait for it to be "done" or else you'll never actually use it!!

1500+ rounds through mine here in the cold, snowy NE. I made sure it worked statisfactorly before I invested in accessories and doubled its price. I have been putting about 200 rounds a week through it.

It goes to the range every time I do.

Kinda hard to shoot when the ranges are closed due to snow.

I suppose that's true. Where I shoot, we can open up and use the range when we want (within given hours) so I guess I have it lucky. However, a couple times I have had to trudge through a couple feet of snow just to get to the gate and then shovel out a bench and shooting lane in order to shoot.

Of course, I grew up routinely shoveling out an entire hockey rink by myself in order to skate so I guess I'm used to it. I love living in Wisconsin.
